My 2nd Christmas stock would be DISNEY. Why ? Read on !
$Walt Disney(DIS)$ is the 2nd Christmas stock that I like and would like to share.
I have shared my first Christmas stock ($LVMH-Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton(LVMUY)$ in another post.
Could click here to read about it (pls like it also ok - hee hee).
What are the news or catalyst or reason that made me think of Disney ?
- For a start, no one can avoid the massive publicity the movie Avatar - The Way of Water has generated since its official released on 15 Dec 2022 (Thu); here in Singapore and Wordwide.
- So far, worldwide tally of the intakes stands at US$900 Million (see below).
- Its looking to surpass "Doctor Strange In the Multiverse Madness" movie's collections.
- Its certainly going to crack the US$ 1 Billion mark very soon if it cotinues its box office hit run.
- Its already the Top 5th highest grossing movie in 2022; barely 2 weeks released.
Other Disney movies in 2023 to keep the "Ka Ching" going are :
- Ant Man & The Wasp : Quantumania (17 Feb).
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (05 May).
- The Little Mermaid "live" (26 May).
- Elemental (cartoon) (16 Jun).
- Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny (30 Jun).
- The Marvels (aks Captain Marvel) (28 Jul).
- The Haunted Mansion (11 Aug). Star studded cast - Winona Ryder, Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson etc....
- True Love (06 Oct). Sci fi movie directed by Star Wars : Rogue One director Gareth Edwards.
- Wish (23 Nov). Animated film starring Oscar winner Ariana DeBose
With recession at the doorstep, would it affect Disney and other entertainment stocks ?
On the contrary. Its been proven time and time again, during tough economic times, movies really offer escapism (not just in an interior sense, but in a physical sense—the cinema is an escape from work and home) for a relatively small price.
Also, we have to remind ourselves that Disney is not merely a movie churning studio, it is an Entertainment Conglomerate that encompasses :
- Media networks,
- Parks and Resorts,
- Studio entertainment,
- Consumer products
- Interactive media
It has so much to offer. With borders restrictions removed, people from all over the world are trying to make sense of a normal life as much as possible.
Disney theme parks the world over (US-California, US-Florida, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris, Shanghai) are seeing customers returning to spend a day or days with them.
How is Disney's profitability this year and going into 2023 ?
- Business wise, Disney has momentarily lost its footing (refer to below table for details).
- It is re-gaining its foot slowly but surely.
- Just this Nov 2022, ex-CEO Bob Iger has taken hold of the rein from CEO Bob Chapek as per the Board of Directors' decision.
- Looking at its Q3 2022 earnings, it has fallen short
- Its "really not that dire" a situation.
- By securing Bob Iger's return, the BOD has taken a proactive stance to give this 100 years old giant a dust up and makeover.
- With all the blockbuster movies coming out at a cinema near you - its already looking a tad brighter down yonder no ? Whahahaha
Like $LVMH-Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton(LVMUY)$ I have present that Disney is worth a considering going into 2023. Do you think you will take a 2nd look at Disney ?
