Full Self-Driving Beta Version 11 Launches to Customers with Significant Changes

Tesla is in the process of launching Full Self-Driving Beta v11 to Beta participants, addressing the recall concerns set forth by the NHTSA.

The headlining feature in v11 is that Autopilot and Full Self-Driving software stacks can simultaneously function at the same time, which effectively combines them.

This feature is being called ‘FSD Beta on Highway’, as the Beta was previously optimized for city streets.

Tesla is additionally taking steps within this update to fix the concerns set forth by the NHTSA in their formal recall, which temporarily prevented the automaker from rolling out the Beta to new customers.

These remedies include:

  • Improved decision logic to proceed through or stop at certain yellow lights. This modeling considers the estimated deceleration required to stop, the time it would take to enter and exit the intersection, and the distance that would be traversed across the intersection before a light transitions to red. The goal is to make yellow light handling more natural through a new framework.
  • Improved longitudinal slowdown control profile when leading up to stop sign intersections.
  • Improved speed adjustment when entering certain speed zones in accordance with speed limits. A new visual glow behind the speed limit will alert the driver when the vehicle’s set speed exceeds the speed limit by more than 50%. The option for a mile-based Speed Limit offset in the Beta was removed, and users can now only offset it based on a percentage.
  • Maneuvers from a turn light where the vehicle continues traveling straight will now include a turn signal indicator.

Users can now expand the Full Self-Driving Beta visualization by dragging the gray visualization bar to the right.

Tesla reserves the right to suspend participation in the Full Self-Driving Beta if “improper usage” is detected. Improper usage is defined as receiving five Forced Autopilot Disengagements for inattentiveness. Suspension will occur for two weeks, during which period Beta participants will no longer be able to engage the Full Self-Driving Beta.

Real Talk

These changes are mostly conscientious on Tesla’s part, achieving the main goal which is for a fluid, human-like autonomous experience.

At the same time, Full Self-Driving is becoming more complete and drivers will be able to naturally traverse between city streets and highways.

The introduction of a suspension period is responsible on Tesla’s part, and will occur to users that become inattentive while their vehicle is operating on the Beta with five Forced Autopilot Disengagements cumulatively over time.

Tesla addressed the recall fairly quickly with thoughtful solutions to each of the NHTSA’s concerns, and we are glad to see a level of benevolence between regulatory agencies and this widely-available SAE level 2 autonomous solution.

Used model 3 just lost $11000 in value. Tesla’s price cut contagion keeps getting worst. Now used tesla price drop will canabilize the new car sales. Vicious cycle just getting started.
