AI - for better or worse, till death do us part?

Over the course of the last weeks, AI has been hogging the headlines. Now, concerns have been raised by various leaders on the exponential growth of AI.

There is a news article calling for a 6-month pause on AI development. There is a call from various business leaders including Elon Musk on the development of AI. Elon Musk was one of the early investors of OpenAI (ChatGPT).

The Dangers of AI

Here are some of my tweets & muse with concerns about AI (for the week ending 01 Apr 2023)

  • Regulations are needed for AI especially when the market potential is immense. We shouldn't take it lightly when AI can be far superior.

Regulations should not catch up. Regulations must be there to stop exploitation and criminal intent.

  • AI - it is not just about the industrial application or commercial value.

Regulations need to be set to frame reasonable scope to clamp on evil exploitation and anti-competition practices. These need to work in tandem.

  • AI could be one of the greatest empowerments in human progress. It can also be one of the most terrifying. It is imperative that regulators work in close tandem with the industry. Progress needs to drive this and not profits alone.

  • How many of us know the workflow behind Artificial Intelligence? Be it supervised or unsupervised data sourcing, is it not GIGO?

  • When it is an algorithm like AI or AGI, could we have created a monster that we cannot control?

  • Don't we need a business continuity plan (BCP) for AI and AGI misappropriation? The gaps in regulations, data privacy, data security and governance need to be addressed.

  • Can we have a default "Reset" function for all AI and AGI?

  • We started with virtual reality & augmented reality.

Now, we have a new AI-infused reality & at some point, an AI imposed & AI-defined reality. Progress is for better quality but it can be wrapped under "better control". Ethics, laws & controls must be built in.

  • <Yahoo Finance> Given the exponential growth, we may not be able to contain the AI growth. Let's put the necessary regulations, ethics, security, governance, safety protocol in place first. Let's not make a Frankenstein that we cannot tame.

  • AI voice cloning.

There are always 2 sides to each coin. While some meant it for good, some would use it for evil.

A new future with AI

clip from Wall-E

There is is a clip from the (awesome) movie “Wall-E” on how humans have become following technological innovations. Unfortunately, the signs are already here around us with on-demand entertainment, vehicle autonomy, on-demand food, and a life “addicted” to content. How many of us started with the intent of watching one YouTube video and ended up watching continuously for the next 30 minutes or more?

What have we traded our talent, resources & time (the most important commodity) for? If we take a snapshot of our lives right now, would it be a life well lived?

AI can make things better or worst. Its development MUST be managed through proper regulations, ethics, security, governance and safety protocol. We could see major productivity and innovations met with a similar magnitude of crimes and exploitation. There would be a dark side that rises with threats next to opportunities that they bring.

Unfortunately, I am afraid that profits should push through its agenda over a regulated, controlled development. I rather err on caution but I am sure that there would be others who do not share the same sentiments.

When profits are driving progress, it is hard to be stopped, especially when it is funded by greed and envy.

When we achieve AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), AGI could be a power beyond our control.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the representation of generalized human cognitive abilities in software so that, faced with an unfamiliar task, the AGI system could find a solution.

If AGI is able to work with autonomy on its own, will the creation end up controlling the creator? It may not be a scene in Wall-E but it could also be one from Terminator.

There's No Fate But What You Make in 'Terminator Genisys: Future War'

Let the governments work in close tandem with the industry. We can afford to progress with ethics, security, governance, and safety built in for all innovations.

yes. this will be a major milestone for humanity.  there is both progress and pitfalls in such innovations. key is to ensure fair competition,  avoid abuse and not to compromise ethics, security, safety,  and governance.
