U.S. stocks traded in a volatile session on Wednesday, with all major indexes rising at the open before retreating ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve minutes, then paring losses and continuing to move higher late in the day. Interest rates on 10-year U.S. Treasuries fell to their lowest in about two weeks as risk aversion continued to rage in the Middle East following Hamas' deadly attack on Israel over the weekend.

Minutes from the Fed's September meeting showed that most Fed policymakers agreed that another rate hike would be appropriate and stressed the need to keep rates higher for longer as inflation continues to run well above the central bank's 2 percent target.

"A number of participants commented that, with the policy rate likely to be at or near its peak, the focus of monetary policy decisions and communications should shift from 'how high to raise the policy rate' to 'how long to hold the policy rate at a restrictive level,'" the minutes read. '"

On October 12th the IEA released its monthly report showing that US petrol consumption had fallen to its lowest level in two decades, suggesting evidence of demand destruction was emerging. With improved efficiency and a challenging economic environment, production growth is expected to slow in 2024. The IEA cut its forecast for demand growth in 2024 to 880,000 b/d from a previous estimate of 1 million b/d, while raising its forecast for 2023 to 2.3 million b/d from 2.2 million b/d previously.

On October 11, local time, $Exxon Mobil(XOM)$ and shale oil giant $Pioneer Natural Resources(PXD)$ issued a joint statement announcing the final agreement to acquire Pioneer Natural Resources by ExxonMobil. Exxonmobil saw a large number of sell put orders:
