Treasury yield tops 5% for the first time since 2007! ๐จ
Volatility notably returned to the markets this week as investors navigated the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and mixed earning reports from leading U.S. corporations.
Rising bond yields pressured major stock indices, with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY) down 2.3% and the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) down 3% for the week.
Short under 358 as posted yesterday
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury crossed 5% for the first time in 16 years on Thursday, a level that could ripple through the economy by raising rates on mortgages, credit cards, auto loans and more. The 10-year yield hit 5.001% around 5 p.m. ET Thursday, the first time it has traded above that level since July 2007. It retreated from that threshold through Friday.
Regional banks tumbled as higher rates raised worries about the sectorโs exposure to Treasury securities that are falling in value. Regions Financial led the decline after a weak earnings report, falling more than 12%.

Tesla Reports Lower-Than-Expected Q3 Results, Stock Faces Worst Week Of 2023: Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported third-quarter earnings and revenue below expectations. Revenue reached $23.35 billion, a 9% increase from the previous year but falling short of the Streetโs $24.38-billion estimate.
Adjusted earnings per share came in at 66 cents, also missing predictions. The company announced plans to commence deliveries of the new Cybertruck in November. Teslaโs stock experienced a 15.2% decline for the week, marking its worst weekly performance this year.
