IBM is to Quantum, what MSFT is to AI. Invest now?
While doing my research for my post, I stumbled upon the 7 hottest IT trends in the coming years.
No, I am not talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI). That has been covered to death by the media.
Not to mention AI-related stocks’ prices have skyrocketed already.
I am also not talking about Cybersecurity (another hottest trend), for I have already covered it in my other post. Click on title to read — Invest in cyber stocks CRWD, PANW & $S now ?
I am referring to Quantum Computing.
What is Quantum Computing (QC) ?
QC has its roots stretching all the way back to quantum mechanics.
In current traditional computer, information is processed in either 0 or 1 bits state.
QC extended the theory to encompass the possibility of an additional in-between state of 0 and 1, co-existing, thus enabling the possibility of simultaneous complex processing that will take traditional computers years to arrive at the same end results.
When carried out using QC, it takes mere hours.
QC - Commercial Propositions.
Potential applications of QC are vast and still being explored.
Below are key areas (not exhaustive) where significant benefits can be expected:
(1) Science and Materials.
Drug discovery and development. Company that will benefit - $Gilead Sciences(GILD)$.
Chemical reactions and catalysis.
Advanced materials.
(2) Finance and Risk Management.
Portfolio optimization and risk analysis.
Fraud detection and cybersecurity. Think company like $Palo Alto Networks(PANW)$
Logistics and supply chain optimization.
(3) Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning:
Training and optimization of AI models.
Machine learning for scientific discovery. Think company like $Alphabet(GOOG)$
Personalization and recommendation systems.
(4) Other Potential Applications:
Weather forecasting and climate modeling.
Medical imaging and diagnostics.
Cryptography and quantum security. Think company like $Coinbase Global, Inc.(COIN)$
One of the front runners in the Quantum race is a slightly “faded” IT giant - $IBM(IBM)$.
In the early days of computing where mobile phones and tablets are non-existent and personal computers are about to become mainstream, IBM was the godfather of computer peripherals, lording over its mainframes and subsequently mid-range computers.
As computing prowess was wrestled away from corporate installations to consumers, its influence has indeed dimmer by a large extent.
Like it or not — with QC at the cusp of commercialization, IBM seems to be making a comeback.
QC - IBM Key milestones.
Quantum computing's roots may stretch back to the early 20th century, but its practical application is rapidly taking flight.
Here's a look at IBM's key milestones in this mind-bending race:
• 2000s: Quantum pioneers at IBM build the first working prototypes, laying the groundwork for future innovation.
• 2016: IBM Q Experience launches, the world's first public cloud-based quantum computing platform, democratizing access for researchers and developers.
• 2019: IBM unveils the 53-qubit Sycamore processor, achieving "quantum supremacy" by outperforming classical computers on a specific task.
• 2021: The Quantum Developer Starter Kit arrives, providing a user-friendly platform for beginner quantum programmers.
• 2023: IBM unveils System One, the first commercial quantum computer, bringing practical applicability to a wider audience.
• Today: IBM announces System Two, boasting a whopping 127 qubits and enhanced performance, further cementing its leadership in the field.
Beyond hardware, IBM actively nurtures a vibrant quantum ecosystem.
Its (a) Qiskit SDK, (b) Qiskit Runtime, and (c) Qiskit Campus initiatives empower developers, educators, and students to delve into the world of quantum possibilities.
With its decades-long legacy of crafting groundbreaking computing solutions, from mainframes still powering Wall Street to cutting-edge quantum advancements, IBM is a formidable contender in the quantum race.
While the finish line remains elusive, IBM's unwavering commitment to innovation and community building positions it as a front-runner, paving the way for a future where quantum computing unlocks revolutionary breakthroughs across diverse fields.
If Microsoft ($MSFT) thrives on AI applications, IBM will likely do the same for Quantum Computing.
