Economic Calendar for the week of 13May24 - CPI should cause some volatility

Public Holidays

There are no holidays in Singapore, China and America for the coming week.

On 15 May 2024, Hong Kong will be closed to celebrate the birthday of the Buddha.

Economic Calendar (13 May 2024)

Notable Highlights

  • CPI will be the most watched economic data in the coming week. This is expected to bring some volatility to the market. If the inflation comes down, the market can be more hopeful for a nearing rate cut. This can be read as bullish for the market.

  • PPI is a leading reference for inflation. PPI shows the inflation hitting the producers. Any inflation received by the producers would be passed on to the consumers eventually. If this turns out to be higher, it is likely the subsequent CPI can increase as the costs are passed onto the consumers.

  • Fed Chair Powell would be speaking on 14 May and this could move the market with regards to coming interest rate decisions.

  • Core Retail Sales and Retail Sales data will be announced in the coming week. These represent market consumption and a reference to the spending capability.

  • Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index would reveal the manufacturing outlook. A higher reading would can be seen as bullish for the market.

  • Initial jobless claims will also be a key macro data that the Federal Reserve will look into as they ponder the next interest rate decision

  • Crude Oil Inventories can be seen as forward indicators of market demand and consumption. If the trend of excess inventories continues, demand erosion can lead to reduced production & weakening consumer spending.
