The Heroes of Paris Olympics 2024
πππThe Paris Olympics 2024 showcases the world's best athletes who come together to compete and achieve glory for themselves and their country.
Every single medal won is hard earned and countless hours, days and even years are spent to have come so far.
I will never forget the brilliance of Simone Biles, the US gymnast who won 3 Gold and 1 Silver at the Paris Olympics. This brings it to a total medal count to 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals. That makes her the most decorated gymnast in history and possibly the greatest gymnast of all time. However did you know that at the Tokyo Olympics she abruptly withdrew after struggling on the vault? She cited her deteriorating mental health and what the gymnasts call "the twisties", a name given to the feeling of being lost or disoriented during a routine.
However she was able to overcome that chapter in her life and in Paris she was in top form. Coming from a mental deterioration to winning Olympic goals is certainly a great achievement!
Then there is Australian skateboarder Arisa Trew aged 14, who is the youngest member of the Australian Team and a Gold medal winner. She started skateboarding at the age of 7. She showed technical excellence and stylish movement throughout the competition. She said she wasn't really nervous, just thinking it was another skating competition and have fun with all her friends and skate her best. And she did!
Who can forget Pan Zhanle of China? He won Gold in the 100 metres freestyle, breaking his own record in the process. He also won another Gold in the Men 's 4x100 meters medley final. As the anchor leg, he entered the water with his team in 3rd place but overtook swimmers from the US and France in the final 100 meters and his team won! What a phenomenal swimmer!
Special mention must be given to Max Maeder, aged 17 of Singapore who won the Bronze Medal in Kite Foiling. Max said that his hard work is fuelled by the joy of seeing people smile because of the results. Well done Max! You have made Singapore proud.
Kudos must also be given to all the other athletes who may not have won any medals but did their best.
As we wrap up the Paris Olympics today, I must confess I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the events.
The Olympic spirit is best expressed in the Olympic Creed :
"The Most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the Triumph but the Struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
