SanDisk's 80% Gross Margin Plan Turns Short Sellers Into Rally Fuel

$SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$  's Investor Day blueprint for a sustained 80% adjusted gross margins triggered an immediate wave of short selling—only for those positions to get steamrolled by institutional buying.

As management outlined mid-to-high teens revenue growth through fiscal 2030, an enterprise flash total addressable market (TAM) of 1.2 zettabytes by 2030, and adjusted operating margins near 75%, daily short volume more than doubled to 2.34 million shares, the highest since April 17. Traders positioned against the long-term targets.

Institutional block buyers responded in force, driving more than $400 million in net inflows and sending the stock jumping 14%. The order flow overwhelmed the short inventory. With 82.33% of holders already sitting in profitable positions and technical oscillators flashing overbought, the shorts found themselves on the wrong side of concentrated demand.

Forced covering followed. Short sellers had to buy back shares to limit losses, injecting additional upward pressure that accelerated the move through key technical levels. The same defensive short volume that was meant to fade the story instead became high-octane fuel for the rally.

The fundamental backdrop made the squeeze especially costly. SanDisk has shifted away from pure spot pricing toward multi-year New Business Model contracts that lock in minimum financial guarantees and volume commitments. Eight major customers now account for roughly 50% of expected bit volume in fiscal 2027 and two-thirds in fiscal 2028.

CFO Luis Visoso underscored the durability: “Our confidence in the sustainability of the model comes from our multi-year NBMs that are based on intimate relationships with our customers and grounded in innovation and collaboration.”

The company also committed to returning 100% of excess free cash flow (targeted at ~50% margins) to shareholders after funding growth. That combination of contracted visibility, elevated margins, and aggressive capital return left little room for the short thesis to hold once institutional demand hit the tape.
