      When facing paper losses, an investor has to ask why is the stock price down from when he purchased it. Are revenues and earnings declining for the past few years, or is the decline due to temporary macroeconomic conditions? What is the intrinsic value of the stock? Has the investor over paid for the stock? Is the business a still a good quality business, with a strong economic moat that its competitors struggle to break into? For example, if you look at Apple's annual filing Form 10-K, it mentions that Apple's competitors often sell electronic products are very thin margins, and sometimes those competitors are loss making selling these electronics, in an attempt to undercut Apple's premium pricing. Eventually when the market conditions turn, good quality businesses will eventually recover

      Interest Hike @Horizon, Debt Limit Crisis Eases?

      @JC888
      Weekly Jobless Claims for week ending 20 May 2023 The official weekly jobless claims data has just been released. It will displease the Fed as they mull over further interest hikes. Why? Official weekly data is for week ending Sat, 20 May 2023. Claims filed was 229,000 cases versus economists (polled by FactSet) expecting 248,500 claims. Falling “short” of expectations by -19,500 claims. Compared to previous week (225,000), data has come in “stronger” by +4,000 claims. Overall, continuing claims declined by -5,000 to 1.79 Million versus economists’ expectations of 1.82 Million continuing claims. If you have to make an educated guess, which data set do you think the Fed would very much like to see as Actuals, in order to arm them ample data-ammunition to halt interest hike? US - Q1 2023

      All-time highs in Europe

      @Robert J. Teuwissen
      While much of the return this year is being made by U.S. tech companies, several European indices are at or near all-time highs. There are several explanations for this. For one, the banking crisis seems to be primarily an American problem after all (Credit Suisse had major problems even before the banking crisis) and this is then combined with the debt ceiling crisis, another typical American problem. Moreover, European equities are relatively cheap. The euro has also been able to gain some value against the dollar although the scope for a continuation there seems limited. Then, of course, there is a remarkable drop in gas prices, now some 90 percent below their August peak. Last year everyone still assumed that such high energy prices would inevitably push Europe into recession, but th

      In Weak US Market, Buy Utility $NEE & Skip Banks?

      @JC888
      Although last Fri, 12 May pre-market indicators for the 3 composite indexes were “green”, by the time market closed, it was anything but. 3 Indexes last week's performances DJIA and S&P 500 were lower than at the start of the week. Only Nasdaq managed a negligible rise. DJIA was down -1.23% (-414.49 to 33,300.62). S&P 500 was down -0.31% (-12.9 to 4,124.08). Nasdaq was up +0.43% (+53.06 to 12,284.74). “Best” performing index of the week! Gains chalked up in early morning “evaporated” after University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment data was published. Report data for May, 2023 fell sharply to a 6-month low of 57.7 from 63.5 in April. It was also well below forecasts of 63. Consumers are simply worried about the status / progression etc.. of the US economy. Debt crisis standof
