The War Between Tesla & Shorts

Core Events

For the third day in a row, Musk blasted the "consortium's manipulation of the anti-Tesla movement," naming ActBlue, the fundraising platform behind Soros, LinkedIn founder Hoffman and others, and accusing it of funding recent violent protests such as arson at Tesla stores around the world and vandalism of charging piles through five organizations. $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$

Hoffman, of course, was not to be outdone: "Instead of framing conspiracy theories, let's reflect on ourselves."

Ex-

  1. Soros was a significant investor in Tesla, but liquidated his position at the end of 2022 after a fall in the share price caused him to lose a lot of money;

  2. Soros is an important Jewish supporter, very ←, while Musk is currently very →

  3. Musk slammed Soros as "Magneto" back in 2023 and has a history of beef.

Follow up on the incident

  • Hoffman, as a counter-party, shows $0 protest funding stream, Soros Foundation silent;

  • Netizens pick up screenshots of Hoffman's funding;

  • Musk added a taunt: "Talking about your favorite island vacation?"Some interpreted this as a hint that his opponent should "disappear", but in fact it may have been a dig at his opponent's involvement in the Epstein case, i.e., "not a good thing".

Crisis Facts

Tesla is in the midst of its worst crisis of confidence in its 20 years of existence: its stock price has plummeted, its owners are reselling their cars with signs that say "Purchased before Musk went crazy", Cybertruck is being mocked across the internet for its design flaws, its Berlin factory has been occupied by an environmental group for over 72 hours, and the number of complaints against Tesla has surged by 240% year-on-year in Q1, with 72% of them pointing to Autopilot malfunctions.

Deeper Conflicts

This war of words reflects the two ultimate questions in Silicon Valley:

  1. When a founder's political stance is deeply tied to his corporate image, should he be held primarily responsible for business failures?(Musk donates $250 million to Trump and takes a key government position)

  2. When the Cybertruck charging ports are filled with concrete, and "boycott Musk" becomes the new political correctness, are we witnessing an orchestrated siege of capital, or a tech tyrant who refuses to reflect on the consequences of his actions?

    A strong reminder, business and politics are a volatile mix, this is precisely why US Presidents are required to relinquish all business interests. Musk on the other hand has managed to sidestep this, becoming the first unelected businessman to run a government department. It's not going to end well for Tesla.
