Buy "Product+Stock" Strategy? Do You Agree?

There's an interesting investment strategy:
"If you buy the product, buy the stock too."

If you had bought a company's stock every time you bought their product—say, buying $Apple(AAPL)$ shares every time you got a new iPhone, you might be sitting on a fortune today.

Some netizens are now calling this the "consumer-investor dual approach." For example, next time they buy a Labubu figure, they'll also pick up Pop Mart shares. In fact, $POP MART(09992)$ has already surged 169% this year, with a P/E ratio of 93x.

But if you’re a loyal $Lululemon Athletica(LULU)$ customer buying both yoga pants and stock… this time you might have taken a hit. Lululemon just posted better-than-expected Q1 earnings, but lowered its guidance, triggering a 23% drop in stock price.

  • EPS: $2.60 vs. expected $2.58; Revenue: $2.37B vs. expected $2.36B

The key issue? Slowing growth. Analysts now question the company’s growth story and believe it’s entering a low-growth phase, which could mean valuation compression.

Challenges include:

  • Alo Yoga's entry into China, targeting a nearly identical customer base.

  • Tariff-related margin pressure, especially after new U.S. trade policies in April. Like GAP, Nike, and Under Armour, Lululemon relies on Southeast Asian and Chinese manufacturers—tariffs are an industry-wide risk.

Therefore, the “product-stock“ strategy migh not work sometimes.

Let’s add another variable. Some investors also point to excessive discounts as a red flag. When a brand constantly runs promotions, it may signal weak demand or inventory pressure.

Meanwhile, Pop Mart’s products remain in high demand, with collectors calling some of its figurines nearly impossible to get—suggesting strong momentum and growth potential.

So we ask:

  • What’s your view on the “Buy product + Buy stock” theory?

  • Do you wear Lululemon in your everyday life?

  • Would you ever let your shopping cart guide your investment portfolio?

  • Chase $POP MART(09992)$ or bottom $Lululemon Athletica(LULU)$?

I think buy product + buy stock theory is half the story. It means familiarity and if it is popular, there is a good chance of it doing well. However, there is also a risk of bias in this view and resulting in a loss. I feel familiarity with the product is a starting point to study the company’s financial performance well before buying the stock. On the other hand, even if we don’t buy the product, we can also buy the stock if the performance is good. For example, I buy BYD stock but I don’t buy any cars. Same for popmart!

I don’t wear any Lululemon, too expensive!

While my shopping cart is important, the popularity with the masses is more important as my financial means can never beat the masses! So, it is more important to look at trends and don’t fight it. I would consider buying if the company is financially sound and stock price is reasonable.

    Lulu lemon

Buy what product you enjoy to spent on and buy what stock you think can make some profit. Not a supporter of "Product+Stock" strategy.

I think it will work but depend on how much you like about the product. For me, I like Coca-Cola, so I buy $Coca-Cola(KO)$
