The Hang Seng Tech index $HSI(HSI)$ tumbled 8.1% to 3472.42.
Mainland Chinese stocks closed lower, with the Shanghai composite down 4.95% to 3063.97 while the Shenzhen component shed 4.36% to 111537.24.
