The definition of Grief means feeling intense sorrow. I felt it deeply when my father died just 2 months ago. However I don't think I am at any of the 5 stages of grief in the current Bear Market.
It is human to feel a gamut of emotions when trading in the stock market especially in a Bear Market because we have an aversion to loss. However it is important in times like this to take a step back and reflect on our goals and the reason why we are trading in the stock market in the first instance.
My goal to invest in the stock market is simple - FIRE - Financial Independence Retire Early. I truly believe that the stock market is the place to be to grow my wealth in a slow and systematic manner through capital growth and the distribution of dividends.
The current volatility is a natural phenomenon as the markets go through cycles. I actually embrace volatility. It is the price that I pay for long term returns. The best part of a Bear Market is I get to buy quality stocks at bargain basement prices.
So that I don't get carried away by the Big Negative Headlines from the news, I chill out by doing my yoga and meditation. I indulge in my favourite hobby of cooking.
I feel grateful for all the blessings that life has given to me, a loving family, roof over my head, living in a safe and beautiful country like Singapore. When I reflect on all these blessings, it is hard to have negative emotions of Fear, Panic and Anger from Bear Markets.
I stay the course for the long haul irregardless of market cycles with patience and conviction that it is time in the market that counts, not timing the market.
I take comfort that Bear Market will bounce back to Bull Market. It has never failed to do so. Interest rate rises will eventually be curtailed. The Ukraine war has to end eventually. Oil and energy prices will fall which will be a big boost to global economy.
So I look to the future with optimism and confidence that I will reach my goal of FIRE simply by being patient and biding my time.
