Stocks are getting expensive, but there are still deals to be had

There are values in any market. At times like this, they’re just hard to find. We’re in the “hard zone” today as the stock market bounces near all-time highs, and FOMO (fear of missing out) has hit everything from AI stocks to meme coins.I’m seeing fewer opportunities today than I have in years, even in companies I like long-term. The business matters, but as a buyer, so does the price I pay.But some values do exist. There’s one simple way to know if a stock is a great value for long-term investors. Is management aggressively buying back shares or not? If they are, it’s time to pay attention, and I’ll give two great examples of using buybacks as a weapon against an undervalued stock. The Dangers of High ValuationsLet’s start on the bubbly side.Stocks that get the most attention in the media ar

The market will not tolerate them selling shares to finance anything like Tesla can. The US auto industry dilemma

Investments in EVs haven't panned out. US consumers are pushing back against EV mandates and a shift towards electrification.Domestic producers are going to be protected by tariffs on imports, which can go as high as 200% under a 2nd Trump administration. But domestic car sales have been stuck at 16m (annualized) for several quarters and 15% below all-time highs reached back in 2001!Consumers want cars. But the cost of a new vehicle (and even a used one) continue to go up each year. They now cost $48k on average!Meanwhile, in China, the average new car costs consumers $18k and it's going down because of lower-price EVs.The US and Japan - the two global automotive giants - along with South Korea may be able to insulate their home markets. But other countries are more than happy to have cheap

2024 US Election determines the market

The 2024 U.S. presidential election is just around the corner, and investors are bracing themselves for potential market volatility. Historically, elections have had a significant impact on the stock market and forex. Let's dive into how this election could affect the market and which companies and countries might feel the heat. *Election Impact on the Market* Past data shows that markets tend to perform well regardless of the election outcome. Since 1933, the S&P 500 Index has averaged a 14.4% return during periods of unified government control and 12.8% during divided government control. However, election years often see increased volatility, with investors becoming more conservative and pouring assets into money market funds). *Trump Win: Potential Impact* A Trump victory could

SoFi - How to Read an Earnings Report

The earnings firehose is on full blast this week, and the market can often react wildly to earnings based on analysts’ revenue and EPS guesses or a number here or there. But that knee-jerk reaction may not reflect how you think a quarter looked, especially if you’re following Asymmetric Investing frameworks. After 29 years of investing, here’s how I try to process every earnings report, and I think you’ll be a better investor if you do the same.Read the earnings report BEFORE looking at the market’s reaction or how results compared to analyst estimates. Forming your own opinion based on your thesis and long-term outlook is key.Listen to the conference call, if possible. This is your chance to get to know management and understand the nuances of the business. A good leader shows command of th

      Don’t avoid stocks under $10

I still don't see an advantage in avoiding stocks under $10. I believe liquidity surges have a greater impact on price movement. The reasoning behind a $10 minimum cutoff for share price is to engage with stocks that are likely to have institutional holdings, which tend to favor positional traders, in my opinion. If you’re trailing a position based on a shorter-term moving average, it often won't be effective.A $10 cutoff will cause you to miss out on many themes that are trending this month, like the initial moves in $NuScale Power(SMR)$ $Oklo Inc.(OKLO)$, just to name a couple. It's about rule-based profit taking end of the day. I get chopped out those names really quickly unless I design to 20/50-MA trail

Nike and Starbucks have fallen from favor and may never recover

Over the past five years, the $.SPX(.SPX)$ has generated a total return of 108.2%. Short-term government bonds would have generated positive returns no matter the duration. $Nike(NKE)$ would have lost you money! $Starbucks(SBUX)$ would have lost a similar amount if it wasn’t for the recent bounce when former $Chipotle Mexican Grill(CMG)$ CEO Brian Niccol was announced as CEO.What went wrong at these companies? There were operational problems, but let’s start with what investors were paying. You can see below that shares of both Nike and Starbucks were trading for over 30x earnings for much of the past five years. Even toda

6 Stocks That Stand to Get Hit by Bond Market Volatility Bond market volatility is back -- and a handful of stocks are particularly susceptible to its gyrations. It's been a wild year for Treasury investors. The yield on the two-year note peaked at about 5% in April, then dropped to a 2024 low of about 3.5% in September, when the Federal Reserve cut the short-term benchmark lending rate by half a point. Since then, the yield has risen to just over 4%. The bond market isn't acting irrationally. It's aware that the economy -- and inflation -- have been stronger than expected, which means the Fed may not cut interest rates as much as it originally had planned. Also, the likelihood that Trump will win the presidential election has risen in the past few months, according to RealClearPolitics, f

US Market Not Awakened by Tesla's Gains.

Objectively, US market is still “down” for the week (based on past 5 days performances). There isn’t really a single salient reason to account for the poor showings. The only consolation, heading into last trading day of the week (Friday) is the market recovered marginally. By the time it was 4pm: (see above) DJIA : -0.33% (-140.59 to 42,374.36). Extended thursday loss as the index’s component stock $IBM(IBM)$ shed over -6.0%, following Q3 2024 revenue miss. S&P 500: +0.21% (+12.44 to 5,809.86). Nasdaq: +0.76% (+138.83 to 18,415.49). Although there are no strong indicators to explain US market weak performances, there are two economic reports that (I believed) helped buffer the market on thursday. The two reports were : S&P Global Flash US
