Tariffs, Tantrums and The Trump Trade Trap - Do We Still Buy The Dip?
πππTrump's latest tariff barrage has the markets rattled again. But this time it is not just geopolitics stirring the pot. It is Triple Witching Day - An quarterly event where stock options, index options and futures all expire on the same day. Translation? Volatility on steroids!
This time, it is not just China in the crosshairs. Europe, Canada and many countries are facing steep important duties with some soaring as high as 46%. Trump's goal is to reignite domestic manufacturing, shrink the trade deficit and flex economic muscle on the global trade.
But here is the Trillion Dollar question - Does the market still buy into the Trump tariff narrative? Short answer - not like it used to.
Markets initially rallied on the idea "America First" economics. But now with global supply chain strained, input costs rising and retaliatory tariffs hitting US exporters hard especially the farmers and the manufacturers, the shine is wearing off. Even JPMorgan warns that the average effective tariff rate could settle around 15% to 18%, dragging in growth and inflation.
But while headlines scream and stocks tumble, seasoned investors know that Volatility Creates Value.
So what is worth buying when Tariffs tighten the screws?
Defensive ETFs That Hold Up In Trade Wars
$SPDR Gold Shares(GLD)$
$Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund(XLU)$
$Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund(XLV)$
$Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund(XLP)$ When wallets tighten, people still buy toothpaste and cereal. This ETF thrives on consistency and stability.
Contrarian Play - China Tech
$KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF(KWEB)$
Concluding Thoughts
Tariffs may stir short term volatility but they do not rewrite long term fundamentals. While I am bargain hunting the above ETFs, I am under no illusion that tariffs are a sustainable growth strategy. I look for resilience, necessity and global diversification. Tariffs may rattle the markets but they do not erase long term trends.
So while I am watching the market volatility, I am also shopping the shelves - carefully, strategically and meaningfully.
