πππMy 2022 Investing Review & Action Plan for 2023πππ
πππI started 2022 thinking that the worst of the Covid 19 pandemic is behind me and with hopes of bluer skies and booming markets. But little did I know that black swans will be the new normal. This year there is high inflation, the Ukrainian war, hawkish Feds with rising interest rates hikes, energy crisis, Bear Markets and even cryptos come crashing down. What a year!
Will 2023 be better? I certainly hope so.
My defensive stocks and ETFs have done well. The 3 Singapore Banks have held up well and so did my Singapore defensive stocks with $SHENG SIONG GROUP LTD(OV8.SI)$ and $RAFFLES MEDICAL GROUP LTD(BSL.SI)$ in the green zone. However my SReits have struggled with $ASCENDAS REAL ESTATE INV TRUST(A17U.SI)$ and $Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ slightly down.
My US portfolio is down with $SPLG(SPLG)$ that tracks the S&P500 in the red but XLE ETF has jumped 47% due to high energy prices.
The lessons I learnt in 2022 are as follows
1. It is important to diversify in different classes of assets and in different countries. My Singapore stocks have done better than my US stocks. STI ETF is up 14% but SPLG is down 15%.
2. Bear Markets are part of the cyclical nature of the stock markets. It is also a great opportunity to buy my favourite stocks during such time as I get good discounted share price.
3. Buy quality stocks with strong fundamentals to keep long term.
4. Control my emotions and do not panic sell.
5. It is important to have a long term horizon to allow the magic of compounding to happen.
6. It is impossible to time the markets. So dollar cost averaging is an important strategy to use.
Finally it is just as important to be kind to myself and not berate myself for making mistakes in investing. Above all I need to stay positive and optimistic that the Best Is Yet To Be.
So as I say good bye to 2022, I look forward with optimism and good cheer for a wonderful 2023!
