🌟🌟🌟I like to think if my portfolio is up, it is because of my skill in investing.  However the reality is Luck plays a key role in investing.  I define Luck as Risk or Probability that is inherent in investing.

So since Lady Luck is temperamental, I minimise my risk through diversification with ETFs, and quality stocks and not taking large positions.    I also invest in defensive sectors like Consumer Staples and Healthcare.

Most importantly, I believe that patience and a long term horizon is essential to build wealth to achieve my goal of FIRE - Financial Independence Retire Early.

May Lady Luck shine on us always 😍😍😍🍀🍀🍀🌈🌈🌈

Both skill & luck are equally important for me!!

No matter how skillful or knowledgeable we are if there is "no luck at all" we will not able to win the game! Yet blinds 🦯 playing the game in stock market it's just like commit suicide! [Tongue]

Invest don't need luck. Just need to study good compmay and keep invest the same oke everymonyh. No matter the price of stock is high or low just keep invest the same one. Example; You buy a cow. You get milk everyday is consider (dividend) When the price of cow is high after a few year then you sell and earn. If the price not increase keep buying more cow to earn more milk (Dividend) @TigerEvents @koolgal @LMSunshine @SR050321 @Fenger1188 @HelenJanet @SPOT_ON @MHh @Aqa @Tiger_SG Agreed with me?

Both skills and luck are important. You can have skill to choose the right company, but when Suay Shin (god of unluckiness) hit, GG. When you have luck with no skill, is like being given a winning lottery but no idea how to encash it. Having said that, mindset triumphs both. With good mindset, regardless on whether luck or skill is down, you will learn, improve, work harder, get luckier and ultimately win in the end. I would say in short term maybe luck will have better result than skill. But in long term skill definitely will beat luck.  Our decision is based on skill and the result is based on luck. But your skill will control the risk to minimum if the luck is not at your side. @BenjiFuji @Mrzorro @LMSunshine @Fenger1188

I believe you make your own luck by investing. So 100% luck. All the knowledge available doesn't always save experts when a 1% hits the table and causes havoc. Look at the current market where experts have been burnt or are  institutions which have done poorly. Luck all the way with a bit of knowledge.

It should be said that 3 points depend on luck, and 7 points depend on knowledge and keen analysis ability.  Even if you have done all your investment homework, entering the market at the wrong time will lead to a complete failure.  Fundamentals, technicals, and news are all indispensable.

I would say the decisions could be based on skill, but results are always based on luck. And your skills also depend on how lucky you are.Skill is the choice you make, the decisions you take in those circumstances, the preparedness you have to manage the risk side of it.Luck helps those who have Skill, but if you have skill does not mean that you would be lucky. As when an opportunity pans out a skilled person would be in a better position to take advantage of the same but being skilled does not always lead to attracting the opportunity, and take advantage of the same.Take the example of active fund management. We have seen in past years many active fund managers have not been able to outperform the benchmark which is the major and only expectation from any active management, but that does not mean that the fund managers are less skilled. In fact, they have gained more skill in these years, by experiencing new developments, understanding the market movements and upgrading them, etc.

Luck is just playing lottery. Skill is critical for investing as in one needs to know his/her risk level - i.e when to enter, position size and exit level. Investing is about seizing the opportunities when presented, minimising loss & maximising profit.🐯🎯 🥳 [USD] [USD] [USD]

To me, discipline and patience is very important. If these two traits are considered skills, then skills is more important.

However, end of day it really boils down to luck. Those who really bought into Tesla in the early days can literally stopped working and make a living by selling covered calls for Tesla.

Tesla is not only a merely car company like GM, Ford or Toyota, but tech, energy, software company. That's why Tesla is worth a lot more than any car company.

This is pretty much similar to the question of whether nature or nurture determines outcomes. And the answer is both, although nature sets the limits for nurture. So skills are important but u need a bit of luck to thrive in the stock market.

I feel that for short term trading, skill is more important than luck.

However to be successful in investing in the long run, the impact of luck is really more important. A lot of people will be tempted to take profit when the stock you are holding is up a lot, like 20%, 50%. But few will be able to stock past the 100% gain.

I think luck plays a part, and so does the skill. It depends on when you are in the market initially. When the price is too high when you buy the stock and it continues downward trend, you feel you are unlucky and the opposite is also true. Skill comes in when you analyse market,  the stock and the factors affecting the market.  It maybe at the time decide what you should be doing.

Skill really need to come in first. Analysing trends, support n resistance, etc etc. Fundamental knowledge is important especially for mid to long term investor. What is utmost important is actually discipline. Many traders give excuses n continue to hold a dying stock. Luck come next. One really cannot depend on luck unless he's really extremely lucky. It's not something that can happen everyday

patience and skills is more important. need to be able to follow the trend until it bends. risk management will make sure you stay in the game. let your winner run and cut your losers short. also don't get married to your bias.

you need some luck to go your way as well.
