The Periodic Table of Commodity Returns

For investors, 2021 was a year in which nearly every asset class finished in the green, with commodities providing some of the best returns. This graphic fromU.S. Global Investorstracks individual commodity returns over the past decade, ranking them based on their individual performance each year.

Commodity Prices Surge in 2021

After a strong performance from commodities (metals especially) in the year prior, 2021 was all about energy commodities.

The top three performers for 2021 were energy fuels, with coal providing the single best annual return of any commodity over the past 10 years at 160.6%. According to U.S. Global Investors, coal was also the least volatile commodity of 2021, meaning investors had a smooth ride as the fossil fuel surged in price.

Bullish yes, but only on specific commodities that are undergoing a periodic squeeze (and thus “de-commidified” as a rare commodity is kind of a misnomer). No decade long bull run in sight. What for?

Those which supply side take years to come into stream should have better run than the generalised commodity.

Rare earth remains favourite spots as the entry level is much higher than other metal commodity. Even nickel is difficult to mine.

Commodity will still be expected to be bullish in 2022 as Omicron serverity seems low and less impact to econmy.
Glencore (GLEN) on LSE would be one to watch.

Value of a fruit is on its meat, not on how pretty the skin is. Up and down, the meat will always have value. (commodities are the meat, services just the skin)
