Monday Afternoon Market Recap

• The Dow Jones Industrial Averagedropped on Monday as a plan tobackstop all the depositorsin failed Silicon Valley Bank, along with other extraordinary measures, failed to boost bank shares.TheCboe Volatility index (VIX), Wall Street’s preferred fear gauge,reached a level not seen since late 2022 and neared territory considered highly risky, up nearly 2 points at 26.52. Meanwhile, Treasury yieldstumbled Monday, helping to lend some support to equities.

• GitLab tumbled 36% after GitLab issueda softer-than-expected outlook. It posted fiscal-year 2024 revenue guidance of $529 million to $533 million in 2023, compared to expectations of $586.4 million, according to Refinitiv. Otherwise, the firm reported a beat on the top and bottom lines in its fourth quarter results, per Refinitiv.

• First Republic Bank the bank stock popped 10% in extended trading, after plunging 61.8% during theregular trading sessionon Monday. Fears of contagion risk from Silicon Valley Bank weighed on the stock.

• United Airlines fell 6.5% after United Airlinesposted a profit warningfor its first quarter. The airline company guided for first-quarter adjusted loss between $1.00 and 60 cents per share, according to an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That’s compared to prior guidance of earnings of 50 cents to $1.00 per share. It’s also lower than consensus expectations of 65 cents per share, according to FactSet.

• Bank stocks remained under pressurefollowing last week’s slide, withJPMorgan ChaseandCitigroupfalling. Regional banksfell even more, led by a drop of more than 61% inFirst Republic.But investors bought up other areas of the market outside of banks, such as some technology stocks likeAppleand defensive names includingJohnson & JohnsonandEli Lilly.

• Rivian Automotivehit an all-time low during Monday’s trading session, dropping below $13.20 per share, after aRivian spokeswoman saidthe company is in talks withAmazonto adjust their exclusivity agreement for the EV maker’s electric delivery trucks.The stock is down more than 2.7% in Monday’s session.
