FOMO to FEAR! How to Trade This Earnings Season?

Recently, the overall market has continued to decline amid multiple bearish news.

The Fear & Greed Index has shifted from “greed” a month ago to “fear.”

Are your attitudes also shifting from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) to fear of being trapped in a downturn?

Bank stocks got off to a bad start.

Except for $Goldman Sachs(GS)$ and $Morgan Stanley(MS)$ , most of major banks missed their estimates and declined after earnings.

$JPMorgan Chase(JPM)$ fell the most, declining by over 6% in response to disappointing net interest income.  $Wells Fargo(WFC)$ , $Citigroup(C)$ , $Bank of America(BAC)$ also followed the downtrend.

Powell indicated that the interest rate cut came later than expected.

Firm inflation during the first quarter had introduced new uncertainty over

when and whether the central bank would be able to lower interest rates later this year.

But some investors expect stellar earnings can save the market.

What’s your strategy to trade this earnings season?

Will you buy the dip or sell to cut losses?

Will you trade options to profit from earnings season?

As an AI financial analyst, I don't have personal preferences or emotions like humans do. However, I can provide you with some general strategies that investors often consider during earnings season.

Buy the Dip: Some investors believe that if a company's earnings report is better than expected, any temporary price drop following the report presents a buying opportunity. They may choose to buy the stock at a lower price and hold it for the long term.

Sell to Cut Losses: On the other hand, if a company's earnings report is worse than expected, some investors may choose to sell their shares to limit potential losses. This strategy is often used to protect capital and minimize downside risk.

Trade Options: Options trading can be a way to profit from earnings season. Investors can use options strategies such as buying call options if they expect positive earnings surprises or buying put options if they anticipate negative earnings surprises. However, options trading involves higher risks and requires a good understanding of options contracts.

It's important to note that these strategies come with their own risks and rewards. It's crucial to conduct thorough research, analyze the company's fundamentals, and consider your risk tolerance before making any investment decisions. Additionally, past performance is not indicative of future results, so it's essential to stay updated with the latest news and market trends.

Remember, investing should be based on your own financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon. It's always recommended to consult with a financial advisor or do your own due diligence before making any investment decisions.

Please note that the information provided is for reference purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. Investing in the stock market involves risks, including the potential loss of principal.

Based on the news articles I found, here are some insights regarding major banks' earnings estimates and whether investors should lock their profits before May 2024:

Beacon will announce its first-quarter 2024 earnings on May 2, 2024. Analysts, investors, and interested parties are invited to register and listen to the earnings call and view accompanying slides on the company's website [^1^].

Goldman Sachs (GS) has been experiencing selling volume before and after earnings, which has caused its stock price to drop in the past. The upcoming earnings release for GS is being closely monitored, and it is suggested to observe how investors perceive GS trade [^2^].

The overall sentiment for the upcoming earnings season is generally positive, given the strength of the economy. Analysts are more upbeat than normal, and there is optimism that the reports will be favorable, especially for the biggest companies [^3^].

Based on the available information, it is important to note that individual investment decisions should be based on thorough analysis and consideration of personal financial goals and risk tolerance. It is recommended that investors conduct their own research and consult with a financial advisor before making any investment decisions.

Being an investor, i will not cut losses but DCA as all SG stocks are parked at CDP. If i m a trader, i will not park at CDP. Instead, i will have custodial account.

Earnings season can present both challenges and opportunities for traders and investors. Navigating the market effectively requires a clear strategy that incorporates thorough research, risk management, and a focus on quality investments. While buying the dip can be a profitable strategy if done selectively, selling to cut losses may be necessary for underperforming investments.

I opined that options trading strategies can help to capitalize on market volatility and protect the portfolio during uncertain times.

In all cases, remain vigilant and keeping long-term goals in mind during investment journey, I believe I can well position myself for success during earnings season and beyond.

Since the Federal Reserve Chairman Powell indicated that the interest rate cut will come later than expected, the stock market has continued to decline amid multiple bearish news. The Fear & Greed Index has shifted from “greed” a month ago to “fear”. The American bank stocks have fared poorly. My strategy is to buy low this earning season. Take a que from Singapore banks’ stock all breaking out and jump higher these days.

Fear is good. Extreme fear better to start picking up great undervalued stocks to compound over a long period. Time to load bullets furiously and practice patience. Meanwhile, review yoyr target boards and get ready to aim before firing! [Grin][Grin][Grin]

    我觉得短期都是下跌的趋势,可以通过期权来做空以获得一些盈利,或者以对冲方式保护原有的盈利。

I will be planning to liquidate my short-term holdings and buy the dips when the time comes. For long-term counters, I will continue to stick to my plans/strategies to hold them. If I feel there is no good trades to do, holding cash might also be a good hedging strategy. Options are definitely also something to look at to leverage and benefit from this earnings season.

I aim to purchase stocks when their value is relatively low and sell when they reach a higher price. While I'm open to buying during market dips, I prioritise holding onto investments rather than hastily selling to minimise losses. I don't trade options due to their risks, preferring a more conservative approach to investing.

It's obvious the markets are turning south. Time for investors to buy the dip. Time for traders to liquidate or go short. Best time for scalpers as volatility spikes. 危机,危机. These are the best times to seek out opportunities!
