Xiaohongshu Concept Stock Jumps 10%! Can DUOL Profit From Surging Demand?

Last week’s impressive buzz around Xiaohongshu couldn’t be ignored by the stock market. Xiaohongshu surged to the top spot on app rankings in multiple regions. Surprisingly, the Xiaohongshu concept stock turned out to be... $Duolingo, Inc.(DUOL)$?!

Duolingo climb 10% as users flock to the app to learn Mandarin

Duolingo has doubled its stock price in the past two years, riding the waves of post-pandemic growth and AI advancements: up 43% in 2024 and an astonishing 218% in 2023.

The post-pandemic tourism rebound has also contributed to the growing interest in learning new languages.

Duolingo has further benefited from AI innovations, partnering with OpenAI long before generative AI became a hot topic, and now it’s fully armed with cutting-edge AI tools.

Apart from these external factors, Duolingo’s marketing is widely accepted online. Its “angry bird” style of nudging users to stay consistent in their language practice has won over many fans.

Whether or not this trend can significantly boost Duolingo's monetization?

WSB users joked that

so many Americans are turning to a Chinese app and trying to tackle one of the world’s hardest languages instead of going back to Facebook—puts on $Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$.

However, Meta’s performance last week was relatively stable, neither benefiting from a potential influx of TikTok users nor facing additional downside.

Some netizens commented that

this trend might just be a passing craze—Mandarin is simply too difficult. If US users find it too hard, they might stop logging in and learning—puts on $Duolingo, Inc.(DUOL)$.

Do you have any tips for Americans learning Mandarin?

Singapore has long been a multilingual model nation, where many children grow up learning both English and Mandarin. Many Tigers in the community seamlessly switch between the two languages in their posts. Any tricks for mastering Mandarin?

When traveling abroad, do you prepare by learning the local language, or do you rely on translation tools?

I’m currently using Duolingo to learn Italian in hopes of having a smooth trip this year. But I do feel that some of the lesson structures are a bit lacking. For instance, my first lesson was “I am a woman” and “You eat an apple,” which doesn’t seem all that helpful for traveling.

Some friends prefer not to learn a new language and instead buy translation devices, such as portable translators or earbuds from iFlytek, for real-time translations.

Translation apps have also become incredibly convenient. When traveled to Japan, the iPhone’s built-in translation app allowed me to take pictures of text. It was more than sufficient for ordering food.

Questions to discuss:

Are you bullish on $Duolingo, Inc.(DUOL)$’s performance?

Would you use Duolingo to learn languages?

Any good advice to learn Mandarin?

Do you prefer to learn new languages or use translation tools in travel?

I’m watching $Duolingo, Inc.(DUOL)$ closely due to its impressive growth. The company’s AI partnership and the interest in learning Mandarin make it a strong contender, but Mandarin's difficulty might lead to user drop-off, so I remain cautious.

I’ve used Duolingo for French during my study in France. While helpful, some lessons (like "I am a woman") aren't practical for travel. But the gamified approach keeps me engaged.

For Mandarin, I suggest using apps, YouTube, and immersion through media to speed up learning.

When traveling, I prefer learning basics but use translation apps for quick help. Snapping photos or using speech translation apps works well for reading menus and simple communication.

Duolingo’s growth is promising, but monetization is key. Keep an eye on it, though competition from $Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$ remains a factor.

I have not tried using Duolingo to learn languages. Thank you for the recommendation! I do have languages that I want to learn like Spanish, will find the time to explore it! It seems like the more the US wants to ban Chinese apps, the more Americans flock to them. The Chinese apps are indeed more appealing to users and having a good community feeds into the creation of better and more relevant content.

Looking at the current demand in the top 2 economies and the sheer population size, I am bullish on Duolingo!

There is no good way to learn languages besides practice, practice and practice. Being immerse in the environment of the language is definitely needed. This environment for mandarin in Singapore is not great and many use them only in schools or simple daily use. Very few would consider themselves expert in the language.

I definitely use translation tools when I travel. Traveling is for relaxation. Time is too short and too tedious to learn a new language.

Learning the local language while travelling abroad is beneficial for social interaction and making new friends. Translators are a great help when lost for words.

Artificial intelligence-assisted language teaching/ training App has a bright future. Especially 小红书 was the first platform which provided directly communication for China and US ordinary people. Language education is demanded.

I am cautious about Duolingo’s growth. Language learning is not new and other than direct translation, it still depends on individuals' interest level and motivation to learn. something that AI cannot help with.

Thus, Mandarin's complexity could cause user drop-off. Especially after the novelty dies off. Can still just post pics and English text anyway.

I used Duolingo to learn languages before but wasn't persistent so i pretty much only remember conversational words, lol.

Learning Mandarin takes consistency especially on the tones. Have conversation practice and watch chinese drama!!!

I prefer app translation as it is convenient and can use phone for text. But i missing the cultural nuances which I appreciates in enjoying the local culture/living
