Stock Market Sell-off Causes The Worst January Since 2009β€”Then What??

The major indexes finished green after a wild day of volatility. πŸŽ’ The tech-heavy Nasdaq also pulled a monster comeback, closing +0.6% after it plunged more than 4% intraday. The S&P 500 gained 0.3% and the Russell 2000 jumped 2.3%.

SELLOFF Becomes a HOT Search TermWhat Is a Sell-Off?

According to Investopedia "A sell-off occurs when a large volume of securities are sold in a short period of time, causing the price of a security to fall in rapid succession. As more shares are offered than buyers are willing to accept, the decline in price may accelerate as market psychology turns pessimistic."

Most investors in the stock market for many years may have recalled the bleak time in 2008 when they saw the declines in the past few days. That year, before the storm of the financial crisis hit, the S&P 500 fell more than 2% twice in its first 10 sessions.

In the first three weeks of 2022, the S&P 500 is down more than 7%, while the Nasdaq Composite is down more than 11%.

The graph below shows the stock market movement in January for all years since 2000. January 2022 is marked with a thick red line.

Can this help us estimate the direction of 2022?

One Analyst said, "From a valuation perspective, U.S. stocks in 2022 may look more like 2000 and 2008. Stocks were doing well that year and valuations were at cyclical highs, much like they were a month ago. The opposite was true in 2003 and 2009, when stocks experienced massive losses and valuations were near cyclical lows."

Even in 2003 and 2009, the arrival of the bull market was not smooth sailing. In 2003, the S&P 500 fell another 12% before bottoming, and in 2009 it fell 26%.

Now may be the time for value stocks to do well.

With market valuations still near all-time highs and the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy, I'm inclined to think January's selloff is a bad start to the year so far. In such market conditions, companies with strong balance sheets, high profitability, and reasonable valuations will be more resilient.

There is cautious optimism as the economy recovers from pandemic. Inflation is prevalent & interest rate rises will cause volatility in the markets. Rotation to value stocks would cushion this impact!

Even though current US indexes are in Bear territory, the stock market will bounce back again just like the rapid recovery after March 20! It is important to stay invested to fight inflation! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰

From the trend of market falls in Jan’22, there’ll be more fluctuations in the stock markets, investors can buy good value stocks and hold only to be on the safe side till market recovers ….

2022 is a year when due diligence for selection of stocks that are undervalued becomes very important, unlike the start of COVID-19 & resulting market crash when almost any stock is sure to rise

I think the sell off is a healthy one to correct the unrealistic bubble in the stock market and this should end in first half of the year, while we will see a rebound by the second half! Buy!

The market always rises after a sell-off just like in March 2020 when it tanked and it shot up like a rocket after that with the S&P500 at all time high! So I am optimistic that it will happen again!

Though President Biden isn't pro business, he'll surely get enough backlashes to take action to comfort the market somehow.

Will be volatile till there is more certainty on rate hikes and inflation outlook. Don’t expect huge gains like in 2021 and 2022 with monetary tightening happening soon

If i am holding stocks with already very low valuations, then i need not worry. Selloff affects stocks with very high valuations the most… in my opinion. Have to think of your own strategy

market was high last year, as to whether it will go up to the same range is pretty doubtful. Best of luck to all in this courageous tiger year.

It seems like the market might still have the tendency to be bullish by end of the year . However, the volatility or fluctuations will still be high on the short term basis.

Unpredictable year of 2022, fear of loss will ended losses. Hold on to those good value stocks $Alphabet(GOOG)$ $Microsoft(MSFT)$ $Apple(AAPL)$ shall win at the end.
