What are Ex-Dividend Dates?

The ex-dividend date is the day on which all shares bought and sold no longer come attached with the right to be paid the most recently declared dividend. This is an important date for any company that has many stockholders, as it makes reconciliation of who is to be paid the dividend easier.

Why do Ex-Dividend Dates Matter?

A dividend-paying stock ex-dividend date, or ex-date, is very important to investors. In a nutshell, if you buy a dividend stock before the ex-dividend date, then you will receive the next upcoming dividend payment. If you purchase the stock on or after the ex-dividend date, you will not receive the dividend. Some investors utilize strategies whereby they will purchase stocks just prior to an ex-dividend date and sell shortly thereafter.

My top choice among the stocks listed will be $Linde PLC(LIN)$ . For those who does not know, Linde operates as an industrial gas company in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South Pacific. It offers atmospheric gases, including oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and rare gases; and process gases, such as carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, electronic gases, specialty gases, and acetylene.

Linde demonstrated strong financial performance on March 2024, with significant increases in net income and earnings per share despite flat total revenue growth. Investors may view these positive indicators as a sign of the company's ability to generate profits and deliver value to shareholders. It will be interesting to see how Linde stock continues to perform in the future and whether the company can sustain its growth trajectory.

Besides, Linde has long-term contracts with on-site customers, backed by minimum purchase requirements, thereby securing stable cashflows. In the profitable industrial gas market, the merger of Praxair and Linde has created an efficient player with a considerable size advantage. However, increasing competition for new projects in emerging markets is concerning.

In addition, the company faces vulnerability due to economic growth slowdowns, potentially impacting industrial gas demand. Linde's history of consistently offering lower dividend yields compared with the composite stocks belonging to the sector has been a concern for income-oriented investors. As such, the stock warrants a cautious stance.

How do you think? Do you like Linde?
