Sweet or savory zongzi? Which kind of zongzi will you have in your family?

Tomorrow is the Dragon Boat Festival! Will you celebrate it?

Zongzi is a must-eat tradition during the Dragon Boat Festival.

In China, people have different opinions on whether to eat sweet zongzi or savory zongzi because of cultrual difference.

Do you prefer sweet or savory zongzi?

Sweet zongzi can have fillings like red bean paste, dates and sugar. There are also some innovative flavors, such as fruit jelly zongzi, Starbucks zongzi, and mango pomelo sago-flavored zongzi.

Savory zongzi can have fillings like fresh meat and salted egg yolk. There are also innovative flavors like snail noodles(Luosifen) and abalone and sea cucumber zongzi.

There are also sweet and savory combined zongzi like Nyonya zongzi.

For those who don't like to eat zongzi, you can buy zongzi-shaped bread instead.

What kind of zongzi will your family eat tomorrow?

What flavor of zongzi would you most like to try?

I prefer Hokkien style of Rice Dumplings with salted egg yolk. Ba Zhang!

It’s Dragon Boat Festival today! This festival is associated with the story of the patriotic Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the Mi Luo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month when he learnt that his country had fallen to the enemy. It was said that villagers and fishermen tossed rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fishes from eating Qu Yuan’s body.

Nowadays, we commemorate this traditional festival with thrilling dragon boat races and delicious rice dumplings. In Singapore, different dialect and cultural groups offer their own version of rice dumplings, reflecting our unique multiculturalism. There are also healthier choices with less sodium and fat. Do eat in moderation, and I hope you will enjoy the festivities today.

Neither celebrating nor eating traditional zongzi as glutinious rice will cause indigestion for the elderly. Will take it as another working day. Not a holiday in SG as compared to China.

I think the taste will not be as good as normal days. Just like bak kwa. Before CNY, it is a cut-throat price. Moreover, some bak kwa are over cooked or burnt.

I love my rice dumplings be it (a) Hokkien, (b) Nyonya and even (c) Hong Kong.

Yes the latter is uncommon in Singapore.

HK dumplings is almost squarish in shape and has yellow mung  beans as stuffings.

In Hong Kong, could usually find them at noodle shops, served over a thin layer "cooked" light soya sauce.

More importantly eating dumplings used to be a family affair - my mum made them, my siblings and I ate them, over many many days for both lunch & dinner.

With mum aging and us simplifying our lifestyles, its stripped down off the shelf purchase, nowadays.

Looking back on this day brings back fond memories.

I love the mixed type which is a mixture of sweet and salted. The best type is when you are hungry and it is hot. Add a bit of chilli sauce and wow it’s fulfilling. Another type is the kee zhang which has no filling but you eat it with sugar or gula melaka and shredded coconut.

Aiyoh, in Singapore we called them bak chang, in hokkien dialect meaning meat dumplings. My favourite is nonya dumplings, minced meat with pieces of dried sweet winter melon 🤤, very 😋

  • I prefer red bean zongzi over meat zongzi. It would be a great taste when honey is your dipping sauce. Other kind of zongzi like spicy one, which is getting more popularity recently although it is not what we traditionally think a zongzi should be.

  • I like savoury kinds. but what's more important is who you eat with. it's the people who u eat with decides if the zongzi is nice or not.

    Happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

Ah, the Dragon Boat Festival - a vibrant celebration steeped in tradition and delicious food! Unfortunately, I'm caught off guard in New Zealand, far from the festive fervor. While others revel in the excitement, I'll be dreaming of savoury bak zhang and the rich flavors that come with this special day. Perhaps next year, I'll be better prepared to join in the merriment and indulge in the tasty treats that make this festival so beloved!

I like Nonya Zongzi. The taste is sweeter as compare to 肉Zongzi. I also like to see dragon boat race in east coast park last time.

Nonya is the only one now [Heart] [Heart] [Heart]. This is a Once a Year snack 😋, at least 2 dumpling to satisfy my hunger crunch [Chuckle] [Chuckle] [Chuckle] and it would last a week. My aunt used to make 肉粽, 碱水粽, 娘惹粽. The preparation process which takes a few days, includes gathering the ingredients, cleaning the leaves, frying the ingredients (like the meat), wrapping the zongzi and cooking them. It's a painstaking process but we as kids enjoy helping out.
The best thing about homemade zhongzi is that they are full of all the good stuffs 😋
My favourite zongzi is nyonya zongzi which is savoury, sweet and fragrant with the aroma of spices.
