Thursday Afternoon Market Recap

  • Stockfutures were little changed in overnight trading as the S&P 500 attempted to snap a seven-week losing streak.Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed about 40 points. S&P 500futures and Nasdaq 100futures were near flat. The postmarket moves came after stocks gained in Thursday’s regular session. The Dow rose for a fifth-straight trading day, adding more than 500 points, or 1.6%. The S&P 500 climbed about 2% and the Nasdaq Composite rose nearly 2.7%.
  • A batch of strong earnings from the retail sector boosted market sentiment Thursday. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF gained more than 4%. Macy’s, Williams-Sonoma, Dollar Tree and Dollar General were among the leaders.

Today's Headlines

  • Since Musk’s acquisition bid, Twitter’s share price has dropped more than 12%, and Tesla’s is down about 28% as part of a broad sell-off in tech stocks. In a proposed class-action lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Twitter shareholders allege that Musk violated California corporate laws on several fronts, and in doing so engaged in market manipulation. The shareholders’ complaint says his gripes about “bots” were part of a scheme to negotiate a better price or kill the deal.
  • Gap dramatically slashed its profit outlook for the year as a steep decline in Old Navy sales weighed on results for the fiscal first quarter. The lower-income consumer, which is Old Navy’s target customer, is starting to feel pinched by inflation, Gap Chief Executive Officer Sonia Syngal told CNBC. “We’re dealing with really volatile consumer signals — whether it was last year in Covid, or this year’s post-Covid behaviors,” said Syngal.
  • Broadcom will buy VMware in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at $61 billion, based on the closing price of Broadcom common stock on May 25, 2022, the companies announced Thursday. Broadcom’s purchase of VMware will help the company diversify away from its core business of designing and selling semiconductors into enterprise software, which can have larger margins. Broadcom also reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter earnings and gave upbeat guidance for the third quarter.
