Wednesday Afternoon Market Recap

  • The S&P 500 rose 107.18 points, or 2.6%, to 4277.88, notching its largest one-day percentage gain since June 2020. The technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index added 459.99 points, or 3.6%, to 13255.55, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 653.61 points, or 2%, to 33286.25. All three indexes broke a four-session losing streak.
  • Gold prices, another asset that investors perceive as relatively safe, lost $54.20 a troy ounce, or 2.7%, to $1,985.90, the largest one-day dollar and percentage decline since June 2021. Trading in thenickel market was suspendedfor another day,following violent movesTuesday that sent the metal surging to briefly top the $100,000-a-ton mark for the first time.
  • In New York trading, travel and textile stocks rallied. Cruise linesCarnivaladded $1.39, or 8.8%, to $17.27 andRoyal Caribbeanadvanced $3.52, or 5.5%, to $68.06.American Airlines Groupgained $0.79, or 5.9%, to $14.30 andUnited Airlines Holdingsrallied $2.665, or 8.3%, to $34.90.Tapestry Inc.gained $3.45, or 11%, to $35.88, its largest percentage increase April 2020.

  • Amazon.com’sshares surged 8.2% in after-hours trading after the e-commerce giant said it would enact at20-for-1 stock splitand buy back up to $10 billion of its shares.
  • Goldman Sachson Monday raised its 2022 estimates for share buybacks in the S&P 500 to $1 trillion. Jessica Bemer, portfolio manager at Easterly Investment Partners, said companies’ strong balance sheets are providing investors comfort.
  • CrowdStrike— Shares soared more than 13% in extended trading Wednesday after the company reported a beat on the top and bottom lines and issued strong guidance for the 2023 fiscal year. The company saw earnings of 30 cents per share ex-items on revenues of $431 million in the fourth quarter. Analysts expected earnings of 20 cents per share on revenues of $411 million.
