Monday Afternoon Market Recap
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 211.16 points, or 0.6%, to 33,536.70. The S&P 500 was lower by 0.89% to 3,957.25, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.12% to 11,196.22. Trading was choppy throughout the day, with the market struggling for direction throughout the session and then sliding into the close.
- Health Technology was the top performing sector for the Dow, boosted by shares of Merck and Johnson & Johnson, which surged 3.6% and 2.2%, respectively.Health care was also a major performer for the S&P 500, with the sector up 1.24% at midday. Moderna was the biggest mover, gaining more than 6% after positive news about its latest coronavirus booster vaccine. Biogen also helped the index gain, increasing more than 5% after competitor Rocheโs Alzheimerโs drug failed in two final-phase tests.
- Shares of Paramount Global gained 3.4% in after-hours trading afterWarren Buffettโs Berkshire Hathaway disclosed that it increased its holding in the company to $1.7 billion in the third quarter.

- Shares ofTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Companylisted in Taiwan jumped afterBerkshire Hathawaydisclosed a$4 billion stake in the company.The stock soared as much as 9.44%, reaching the highest levels in nearly two months.Berkshire added more than 60 million shares of the Taiwanese chipmakerโs American depositary receipts, worth $4.1 billion (1.2% ofTSM) by the end of the third quarter, making Taiwan Semi the conglomerateโs 10th biggest holding at the end of September.
- Two major retailers will report earnings Tuesday morning, giving investors more insight into their quarters and how consumers are faring with high inflation and the threat of economic weakness.Walmart and Home Depot will both release results early Tuesday. Analysts expect Walmart to report earnings per share of $1.32 on revenue of $147.75 billion, according to Refinitiv. Estimates for Home Depot are for earnings per share of $4.12 on $37.96 billion in revenue.
- Shares of the blank-check company that said it planned to merge with Trump Media and Technology Group, former President Donald Trumpโs social media company, jumped 11% Monday ahead of an announcement from the former president scheduled for Tuesday.The Digital World Acquisition special acquisition company, or SPAC, is now up more than 66% month to date.
