Shou Zi Chew Meets Trump: Can TikTok Survive the Crisis?

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on December 16.

According to Bloomberg, this meeting occurred just hours after Trump hinted on Monday that he might try to lift the ban on TikTok in some way. Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, Trump said, “We will look into TikTok’s situation. You know, I have a soft spot for TikTok.”

Is TikTok’s fate in the US hanging by a thread?

TikTok has 170 million users in the U.S. Earlier this year, in April, President Biden signed legislation targeting TikTok: “sell it or ban it”.

The scenes when Shou Zi Chew was repeatedly questioned at congressional hearings, are still fresh in memory. The scenes when Shou Zi Chew was repeatedly questioned at congressional hearings, are still fresh in memory.

The legislation requires ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19 next year at the latest. Otherwise, the platform will be banned from app stores like Apple and Google, users won’t be able to download or update the app, and related network services will cease—effectively shutting TikTok down in the U.S.

The company has submitted a request to the Court to delay enforcement of the ban, hoping that the new administration will take part in reevaluating the platform’s restrictions.

As the ban looms, U.S. users have started a movement to defend TikTok.

I believe TikTok's future in the U.S. is uncertain and could go either way. The recent developments, like the meeting between TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and former President Trump, give me some hope that the platform might survive. Trump's comments about having a "soft spot" for TikTok suggest that there might be some leeway, but the looming deadline for ByteDance to sell the app or face a ban adds a layer of tension.

For me, TikTok has become an essential part of my daily routine. It’s not just about entertainment; the app is a place where I discover trends, stay informed, and connect with a community. If TikTok were to be banned in the Singapore, I’d definitely miss it. While I also use other entertainment apps like Instagram and Netflix, none of them offer the same experience in terms of short-form content and quick engagement.

Based on the news articles I found, it appears that the future of TikTok in the U.S. is still uncertain. Here are some key points:

TikTok is facing a looming deadline: The legislation requires TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app by January 19, 2025, or face a ban in the United States. If the app is banned, it won't be available for download or updates, effectively shutting it down.

Legal challenges: TikTok has submitted a request to the Supreme Court to delay the enforcement of the ban. The company hopes that the new administration will reevaluate the platform's restrictions. The Supreme Court is set to hear TikTok's challenge to the law that could ban it.

User movement to defend TikTok: U.S. users have started a movement to defend TikTok. They are advocating for the platform and expressing their support.

It's important to note that the situation is still unfolding, and there is no definitive information on whether TikTok will survive the crisis. The outcome will depend on various factors, including legal proceedings and decisions made by the new administration.

As an entertainment app, TikTok holds a unique position in providing short-form content and quick engagement. While there are alternative entertainment apps like Instagram, Netflix, and Facebook Reels, they may not offer the same experience as TikTok.

Please keep an eye on the latest news and developments regarding TikTok to stay informed about its future in the U.S.

If trump likes Tik Tok and willing to meet its CEO, I think the future looks bright for Tik Tok! Anyway, many Americans depend on Tik Tok not just for many areas beyond just entertainment. Businesses need it too.

Were those parents present in the congress are real parents'kids got into issues, or were they paid by those who want to ban tiktok, to put up shows but actually their kids got into issues are due to other social media?
President elected, should have a panel to look into those parents to see if they are real.

I scroll TikTok and Instagram. TikTok for some mindless entertainment but also observe trend and parody to see what is concerning people these days. Instagram for stay connected to frens and people who I have interest in like sports, artists, etc.
I am optimistic POTUS will save Tiktok from ban. Trump is a biz man and he will want Tiktok for that. He has his fun and advantage in media. He will seek to soft control it rather than a complete ban. TikTok's CEO will sweet talk trump the app's contribution to the U.S. economy! Tiktok is saved!!

TikTok helped Trump win the election. For sure he loves to have TikTok around doing the same to channel his Trump Way of MAGA to the public during his administration. As for now, he  pretends to make it looks uncertain about it to assess the situation before he gets into the WH. 😂

TikTok has faced significant challenges to its survival in the U.S., primarily due to concerns over data privacy and national security. The app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has been scrutinized by U.S. lawmakers and government officials who worry about potential Chinese government influence or access to user data. These concerns have led to multiple attempts to ban TikTok. Will Trump make a u-turn?

    $Spotify Technology S.A.(SPOT)$
