Sell in May and Go Away?  Why Not Pivot into XLU ETF?

🌟🌟🌟 April 2026 just went into the history books.  We didn't just climb, we roared.  With the S&P500 up over 10% marking its best month since November 2020 and closing at a fresh record high, the emotional whiplash is real.

What should Investors Do in May?

The Chaser:  This is one of the best 3 months rallies in history.  The momentum is undeniable, powered by massive earnings beats and an relentless AI surge.  To sell now is to fear the unknown, to sit on the sidelines while new fortunes are made at highs.  Holding cash may mean that inflation is eating away at it.

The Profit Taker :  The voice of caution whispers not to be greedy.  After a 10% gain in one month, the air is getting thin.  The fear of a brutal sudden reversal - the kind that takes 2 steps back for every 3 forward - makes us want to ring the register and lock in gains.

It is a Tug of War:  The Heart says Chase.  The momentum is the news.  The Head says Take Profits.  Valuation is high.

What Will Happen In May?

The Federal Reserve Handover:  The torch is passing from Jerome Powell to Kevin Warsh.  Warsh has officially cleared the Senate Banking Committee as the nominee for the next Fed Chair.  He is a Wall Street veteran known for a hawkish past, yet he faces intense pressure from Trump Administration to slash rates.

The Powell Paradox :  In an unprecedented move, Jerome Powell has announced he will remain as a Governor on the Board after his term as Chair expires in May 15.

Citing unprecedented legal attacks on Fed independence, Powell isn't going away quietly.  He is staying to provide a quiet check and balance until 2028.

The Iran Standoff :  While the White House had officially told Congress it considers the Iran war terminated as of May 1, the situation remains a powder keg.

A fragile ceasefire holds but the Strait of Hormuz remains a primary sticking point, keeping energy prices volatile and supply chains on edge.

Strategic Outlook for May 2026

With a dual blockade in the Persian Gulf and a divided Fed in the US, May is expected to be a month of transition where the market moves from narrative driven excitement to a regime that strictly rewards execution and cash flows.

The Sell In May Myth:  While the old saying suggests exiting for the summer, historical data shows that May is actually one of the best performing months for the S&P500, with a 75% probability of positive returns.

Selective Volatility:  Companies that do not provide clear guidelines regarding AI capex, might see valuation resets.  In contrast true AI winners are those who can deliver measurable productivity gains will likely lead.

The Broadening Rally :  Analysts predict that the market rally will continue to broaden out from the Magnificent 7 to the S&P 493, as investors seek better value in unloved sectors.

XLU : The Utilities Sector ETF

$Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund(XLU)$  is a cornerstone for income focused and defensive investors, particularly during the transition into May 2026.  The surge in XLU is precisely because of the AI Energy Nexus.  As of May 2026, the market has pivoted from software and chips to the physical foundation - the electricity grid that AI requires to function.

The AI Needs Power Thesis

The sleepy utility sector has transformed into a growth engine because AI is fundamentally more energy intensive than traditional computing:

Power Hunger: A single AI task can consume up to 1,000 times more electricity than a standard search.

Massive Investment: Tech hyperscalers like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet are projected to spend around USD 700 billion in AI buildouts in 2026 alone.

Demand Projections: Data center electricity use in the US could rise from under 2% in pre 2020 to 12% by 2028 to 2030.

XLU Top Holdings : The AI Beneficiaries

XLU provides concentrated exposure to the companies managing this surge:

$NextEra(NEE)$  at 14.06% weightage.  It is the largest renewable energy producer in the world.  NextEra recently partnered with Google Cloud to develop gigawatt scale data center campuses.  They are projecting growth rates more typical of a tech company than a utility company.

$Southern(SO)$ at 7.35% weightage.  A major Southeast utility company that recently completed the Plant Vogtle nuclear units.

$Duke(DUK)$ at 6.95% weightage.  Duke Energy manages a massive power grid in the high growth Carolinas.

Duke is currently navigating record breaking interconnection requests as data centers flock to the company for its energy infrastructure.

Core XLU Metrics:

Expense ratio is 0.08%, significantly lower than the 0.50% industry average.

Dividend Yield : 2.6%

Is XLU Undervalued?

The utility sector is currently being re rated from a defensive sector to a growth vehicle.

Relative Value: Trading at a Forward P/E of 19.5x, it is roughly 13% cheaper than the broader S&P500.

Growth Potential :  Analysts suggest that XLU could rally another 15 to 20% by year end as speed to power becomes the primary bottleneck for tech companies.

Key Risks : Interest rate sensitivity remains high.  Additionally grid bottlenecks and regulatory debates over rising consumer electricity bills could create headwinds in May.

Concluding Thoughts

If April was the Roar, May is the Reality Check.

Wall Street's old ghosts will tell you to sell in May and Go Away.  However they are not accounting for a world where AI never sleeps and the Federal Reserve is undergoing a historic new leadership.

We are not just trading tickers anymore.  We are trading a fundamental shift in how the world is powered and governed.

If you are waiting for a dip to buy the same overextended tech names, you might miss the real story.

The smart money is rotating.  It is moving into the XLU infrastructure that keeps the servers humming.

With Kevin Warsh stepping into the spot light and Jerome Powell standing guard in the wings, the Fed era as we know it is evolving.

Don't just sit on your hands and go away.  Pivot.  Watch the power grid, respect the new guard at the Fed and keep your eyes on the ceasefire lines in the Middle East.

April proved the bulls have the heart.  May will prove whether they have the stomach.

Are you taking the profits and running or are you rotating into the Power Pivot of the decade?  Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

β€œSell in May” always sounds good in theory, but the market doesn’t follow simple rules anymore. With AI momentum and earnings strength, I think it’s more about selective positioning than exiting completely. Peace and love for your posts @koolgal :)
