Tuesday Afternoon Market Recap

  • A day after fears of oil inflationpushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average into a correction, the blue-chip index fell 184.74 points, or 0.6%, to 32632.64. The S&P 500 dropped 30.39 points, or 0.7%, to 4170.70 and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 35.41 points, or 0.3%, to 12795.55.
  • The move into havens pushed gold near its record. Gold rose 2.3% to $2,040.10 a troy ounce, after earlier surpassing its closing high of $2,051.50 set on Aug. 6, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data.\
  • The Biden administration’sban on imports of Russian oilsent crude prices up sharply.U.S. crude traded above $130 a barrel, but settled up 3.6% at $123.70. That comes as the price of gasoline in the U.S. hit a record, eclipsing the mark last set in 2008.

  • In corporate news,Mandiantfell 2% to $22.04 afterAlphabet’sGoogle said it had agreed to buy the cybersecurity firmfor around $5.4 billion.Uberrose 7.6% to $30.74 after The Wall Street Journal reported that the ride-hailing company was launching a campaign to head off efforts to classify its workers as employees, which wouldallow them to form unions.
  • Tuesday’s “bounce was a small victory that the low may be in, but it may have to be tested again either later today or later this week,” said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist for the Leuthold Group.
  • Shell apologized for buying cheap Russian oil and said it was divesting itself of all hydrocarbon holdings in the country. Russia itself warned that crude prices could hit $300 a barrel should Western countries enact a ban on exports. Shell shares popped 2.6% on Tuesday.
