Last week, Fed’s June FOMC meeting minutes were released and revealed a more dovish economic analysis, based on recent data on inflation and labor markets. This was supported by the initial jobless claims for 29th June rising to 238k, slightly higher than the consensus of 235k, and seem to be settling at a higher range than earlier this year. Furthermore, continuing claims for week ending 22nd June rose to 1858k (vs 1832k prior), the highest since November 2021, indicative that unemployed workers find it hard to get new jobs. Besides that, composite services ISM fell to 48.8 in June, its lowest since the 2020 recession. This is the second time this year where it has fallen into contractionary territory, which is rare in its 28-year history, and a signal that the economy’s post-pandemic gro
Preview of the week starting 08 July 2024 - is Delta airline worth another look?
Public Holidays America, Hong Kong, Singapore and China do not have public holidays in the coming week. Economic Calendar (08Jul24) Notable Highlights Fed Chair Powell will be testifying this week. If there are any indications about interest rate cuts, this would surely lead to some market volatility. The most watched news will be surrounding the CPI. Consumer Price Index (CPI) is one of the indices used to reference inflation though the Fed prefers PCE over CPI. The market is expecting a YoY CPI of 3.1%. If this is contrary to expectations, the market could become volatile. A higher CPI figure is bearish and would delay interest rate cuts. In fact, some of the Fed committee members have mentioned rate hikes if inflation worsens. 30 year bond auction is a good reference for the market too.

In the history of televised debates between U.S. presidential contenders since 1960, the recent one held between the incumbent President Joe Biden and the challenger former President Donald Trump stood leagues apart from the first ever televised debate that was held between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. In the first, participants were fairly convivial with each other while in the most recent one, participants were abrasive and held back from talking/shouting over each other by moderators muting each participant's microphone while the other was speaking. In the first, rebuttals were delivered with a modicum of calm and respect while in the latest, one contender (Biden) called the other (Trump) a "sucker" and "loser" with the "morals of an alley cat". $ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$ thoughts: The modern day risk on barometer closed above subtly 45 to end last week, and is now above the 50-day moving average. If a character change is underway, this moving average has good record of offering price support.I plan to participate actively in ARKK as price consistently trades above 45. I expect the initial positioning to generate a few paper cuts before establishing full trade size.If price fails to sustain above 45 I will not be interested, and will monitor broader market risk signals (short term trend, breadth and momentum) that favor the odds of a
