After a Messy Breakup, How Can Musk Salvage Tesla’s Stock?
Back in January, Elon Musk was still one of Donald Trump's strongest allies. He visited Washington, stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom, and served as a senior advisor to the White House.
In February, Musk tweeted:
"I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man."
But the honeymoon didn’t last. His hard-charging style, lack of political finesse, and ideological clashes with the MAGA base gradually weakened his relationships within the administration—including with Trump himself.
Although their public fallout erupted only last week, the cracks had been forming for months. Musk’s “move fast and break things” approach often clashed with the more calculated goals of White House policy.
Musk and Bessant came to blows: Trump sided with Bessant
According to reports, in mid-April, Musk and Bessant got into a heated argument in the Oval Office over the appointment of an IRS Acting Commissioner—things allegedly escalated into physical confrontation. Trump ultimately sided with Besant’s candidate. Musk was also said to have privately asked Trump to drop tariffs, but Trump ignored the request until several days of bond market turmoil finally swayed him.
In fact, many in the media had never believed this alliance between two larger-than-life figures would last. But few expected the breakup to be so public—and so brutal. After parting ways, Trump called Musk “insane,” and Musk fired back by calling Trump “ungrateful.”
Come to think of it, is Bessant now Trump’s “new favorite”?
Should Musk now publicly frame himself as the one hurt in this political breakup?
Looking back, what did Trump really do for Musk?
When $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ faced backlash over DOGE and Musk’s political involvement, Trump did showcase Tesla models at the White House, but never offered actual orders. Some Trump supporters may argue that kind of exposure was worth millions in ad spend. But still, Musk donated to Trump’s campaign and even personally campaigned in swing states. And yet, just last week, Trump claimed he could win those swing states without Musk.
Now Trump is on the rise, but Tesla? It’s hanging by a thread...
Should Musk now publicly frame himself as the one hurt in this political breakup, and emphasize his opposition to tariffs? Could that help restore Tesla’s public image?
Of course, if Robotaxi really launches this week, that would mean far more than any PR campaign.
Musk said the company was still on track to launch the program by the end of the month. The start of the program, Musk told CNBC, will likely be about 10 Model Y vehicles operating autonomously, with the company later expanding to more vehicles and cities.
But if not, perhaps it’s time for Musk to start painting a few bold new visions again.
What do you think of this relationship?
Who benefited more—Musk or Trump?
Will Musk step in to protect Tesla’s stock and start spinning a new narrative for shareholders?
If you were Tesla’s PR head, how would you rescue the company’s image?

Musk will have to step in to protect Tesla. It is his baby and money maker. He definitely has to give shareholders what they want to see which is his commitment to Tesla and new plans to move it ahead as well as tackle the roadblocks in production, innovation and sales. It seems to be losing market share in the EU and China.
Tesla would need to brand itself as a commitment Musk, the EV of choice and the promise of better innovation to lead the market.
