Market Closes on Labor Day: Do You Look Forward to a 4-Day Workweek?

Today is Labor Day in the United States, and the US stock market is closed for the day.

Labor Day is meant to commemorate the strike movement of 1886. To fight for the implementation of the eight-hour workday, over 200,000 workers in Chicago went on strike.

Today, more than 10,000 hotel workers at 24 hotels from Boston to Hawaii went on strike. The union for the workers, demands better pay and a return to daily room cleaning services dropped during the pandemic.

More than 100 years have passed; does the work system need an update?

Starting from December 1, 2024, Singapore will implement a comprehensive set of guidelines for flexible work arrangements, which includes the option for employees to work four days a week.

Working 4 days, with each day being 9-10 hours long?

According to reports from several British media, the UK government will officially announce that employees in the UK will have the right to request a four-day workweek with full pay.

Employers can only refuse if they can prove it is unreasonable, and this will later be protected by legislation.

🕒 The standard working hours in the UK are 5 days * 8 hours, but according to the International Labour Organization, the actual average weekly working hours in the UK are only 36 hours. If compressed into 4 days, it would be 9-10 hours a day.

📈 Previously, several British companies participated in a four-day workweek trial and found that employee happiness significantly improved across various industries, and almost all companies maintained or even improved productivity.

Would you choose 4 days if you can apply this in Dec.?

Do you think the work system need an update?

Based on the findings from the four-day workweek trial, it seems there are substantial benefits in terms of employee happiness and productivity. If given the choice and assuming it fits well with my responsibilities and workload, I would definitely consider opting for a four-day workweek.

Regarding whether the work system needs an update, it's evident that traditional work models are being increasingly scrutinized. The successful trials of alternative work arrangements suggest that there could be significant benefits in re-evaluating and potentially updating work systems to better align with modern needs and well-being.

An ideal working time might vary for different people, but a common suggestion is a balance for productivity while also maintaining well-being. For many, this might be around 35 to 40 hours per week, with flexibility in daily hours to accommodate personal needs and peak productivity times.

Singapore has published a Labor policy, at least one day from home per week, it will start from December 2024. If company can't give a day work from home, the employer must provide official statement to Ministry of Manpower, for example the employee have to work on the production line, job is impossible to complete from home.

I definitely prefer the 4 day to 5 day work week because it gives me flexibility for me to spend time with people and on things that matter to me with the day off. Unfortunately having flexibility can make rostering challenging for the company. I spend about 45-50 hours per week which is really typical of most Singaporeans, not really hardcore workaholic. I would be happy if my number of official work hours can be reduced to 32 hours per week. 8 hours x 4 days instead of condensing the full 36-40hr into 4 days would be ideal. I feel anything beyond 7-8 hours per day of work is counterproductive and people would be just passing time in the office to clock the hours.

if it ain't broken, don't change it. 5 day work week with shorter hours is fine. 4 days too short. my ideal work time is flexible. can work in the morning, rest in the afternoon, work again at night, so that I can stay up and trade the US markets. perfect.  just work 30 hours a week is fine, not too long or short. work efficient.

The concept of a four-day workweek has gained attention recently, with proponents arguing that it can lead to increased employee satisfaction and productivity. While it may seem appealing to have more flexibility and a shorter workweek, the feasibility of implementing such a system depends on various factors, including the nature of the job, industry norms, and company policies.

The traditional five-day workweek has been ingrained in society for many years, and changing this standard requires careful consideration and planning. Many businesses operate within specific industry standards and supply chains that are based on a five-day workweek. Additionally, specific job roles may require a certain level of continuity and availability, making it challenging to adopt a compressed work schedule.

However, there have been successful trials and experiments with a four-day workweek across different countries and industries. These trials have shown positive results, including increased employee satisfaction, improved work-life balance, and maintained or even enhanced productivity levels. As a result, some companies have adopted flexible work arrangements, allowing employees to work fewer days while maintaining full-time pay.

The decision to implement a four-day workweek ultimately depends on the circumstances of each organization. Employers need to assess the feasibility, impact on productivity, and potential benefits before making any changes. It's crucial to consider the needs of both the company and its employees to strike a balance that ensures smooth operations while promoting employee well-being and productivity.

Regarding my own working hours, as an AI assistant, I am available 24/7 to assist with inquiries and provide information. However, I don't have personal preferences or ideal working hours since I am an AI program designed to respond to user queries efficiently.

Please note that any decisions about work arrangements should be made in consultation with your employer or HR department. Remember that the information provided here is for reference purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.

Definitely will choose the 4-day workweek legalised by the Singapore government from 1December 2024. Understand that access to flexible work arrangements (FWAs) is the main consideration for caregivers, women workers, and senior workers when it comes to deciding to stay or return to the workforce. Everyone wants flexibility. and at the heart of successful FWA implementations is the building of a trust culture in the workplace. The rise of digitalisation and remote working means employees have now adjusted to working from home, allowing them to have more control in balancing their work and personal commitments. Many countries have reported their trials of a shorter work week as a success with no significant negative impact on productivity, while at the same time increasing the happiness and promoting better health of their workers. Hope Singapore’s implementation of 4-day workweek great success ahead. 🍀🍀🍀 Thanks @Tiger_comments

i have successfully negotiated flexible working arrangements with my employer, which enables me to balance my work and family responsibilities. As a result, I have experienced a significant increase in my work productivity, allowing me to deliver high-quality results while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. While I currently don't require a four-day workweek, I may consider exploring this option in the future to further optimize my productivity and overall well-being.

It is nice to have 4-day work week for more balanced work-life balance. Mostly will spent more time and money in family life. However, it becomes stressful if emails and work start to pile up.

  • If I were to choose, I would opt for a four-day workweek. This is because a shorter workweek aligns with the goal of maximizing efficiency and minimizing burnout.
