Wednesday Afternoon Market Recap

  • U.S. stocks rose, then slumped while Treasury yields surged and then fell on Wednesday as markets reacted wildly to a bleak economic picture next year after the Federal Reserve adhered to a tough stance to fight inflation by jacking up interest rates.
  • The Federal Reserve made history on Wednesday, approving a third consecutive 75-basis-point hike in an aggressive move to tacklethe white-hot inflation that has been plaguing the US economy. The supersized hike, which was unfathomable by markets just months ago, takes the central bank’s benchmark lending rate to a new target range of 3%-3.25%. That’s the highest the fed funds rate has been since the global financial crisis in 2008.
  • Higher rates aren’t the only concern for the stock market right now. Rising rates are sending the dollar higher, as global investors buy up more greenbacks in order to purchase U.S. bonds when their rates become more attractive. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is up more than 1% to just over 111, which would mark a new multi-decade high. That hurts corporate profits because U.S. multinational companies that generate sales overseas report fewer dollars when they translate those sales back into a stronger dollar.
  • Gold is considered a hedge against inflation and geopolitical risks but rising rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion.Earlier in the day, the metal was up after Russian President Vladimir Putin's move to mobilize more troops over the conflict in Ukraine drew investors to the safe-haven asset, offsetting pressure from a firmer dollar and expected U.S. rate hikes.Spot silver jumped 1.55% to $19.6097 per ounce, while platinum fell 1.39% to $909.38. Palladium declined 1.2% to $2,141.88.

  • Shares of $NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$ surged higher Wednesday, jumping as much as 3.3%. As of 12:46 p.m. ET, the stock was still up 3.1%.The catalyst that sent thesemiconductor specialisthigher was analyst reaction to announcements made during Nvidia's 2022 Global Technical Conference (GTC).
  • $KB Home(KBH)$ — Shares dipped 2.1% in extended trading after the homebuilder disappointed on revenue expectations in itsearnings results. KB Home reported earnings of $2.86 per share on revenue of $1.85 billion. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting earnings of $2.67 per share on revenue of $1.87 billion.
