Wednesday Afternoon Market Recap

• The S&P 500 ended the day down 0.83% at 3,958.79, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 1.54% to 11,183.66. The Dow Jones Industrial Average wrestled with the flat line all day, but finished down 39.09 points, or 0.12% at 33,553.83.Those moves came after Target reported a decline in sales as families deal with high inflation heading into the biggest shopping season of the year for retailers. The warning weighed on stocks,sending Target down more than 13%for its worst day since May. Macy’s, Nordstrom, Kohl’s and Gap were also down sharply.

• Cisco shares jum ped 4.8% after the maker of computer networking equipment beat expectations for its first-quarter earnings per share and revenue, according to StreetAccount. It also issued second-quarter and full-year outlooks that showed those same indicators either matching or topping expectations. But Cisco said the non-GAAP gross and operating margins would likely come in below expectations for the next quarter.

• Bath & Body Works the company jumped 16.3% after third-quarter results doubled StreetAccount’s per-share earnings estimate. It also beat on revenue. bath & Body Works issued fourth-quarter per-share earnings expectations that were about in-line with analysts polled by FactSet, but raised its full-year guidance.

• Tencent to report earnings, reportedly starting new round of job cuts.Shares in the Asia-Pacific traded mostly lower with theHang Seng Indexfalling 2.3% in its first hour of trade, as Chinese technology stocks saw sharp losses afterTencentannounced to slash its over $20 billion-stake inMeituan.

• The lending arm of the crypto investment bank Genesis Global Trading is pausing new loan originations and redemptions.The lending arm of the bank serves an institutional client base and is known as Genesis Global Capital. At the end of its third quarter, it had more than $2.8 billion in total active loans,according to the company’s website.
