Tuesday Afternoon Market Recap

• Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Tuesday that disinflation “has begun” but is going to take time. Markets latched onto Powell’s words and briefly turned positive, before flipping back to negative after he cautioned about stronger-than-expected economic data. “If we continue to get, for example, strong labor market reports or higher inflation reports, it may well be the case that we have do more and raise rates more than is priced in,” he said.

• U.S. stockfutures ticked down in overnight trading Tuesday.Dow Jones Industrial Averagefutures fell by 46 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100futures dipped 0.15% and 0.16%, respectively.Stocks closed near session highs after a volatile bout of trading on Tuesday. TheDow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 265 points, or 0.78%. TheS&P 500 rose 1.29%. Meanwhile, the tech-heavyNasdaq Composite outpaced the other two indexes, gaining 1.9%.

• Chipotleshares fell more than 4% aftermissing expectations on the top and bottom linesin its latest results. Meanwhile, cybersecurity stockFortinetjumped more than 15% after topping earnings per share estimates.

• Microsoft plans to release technology to help big companies launch their own chatbots using the OpenAI ChatGPT technology.Companies would be able to remove Microsoft or OpenAI branding when they release chatbots developed with the software.Microsoft is working on incorporating ChatGPT technology into many of its products, including Bing and Edge, which it announced Tuesday.

• SoftBank’s flagship investment arm, the Vision Fund, posted its fourth straight quarterly loss on Tuesday as a slump in technology valuations continues to hit the Japanese giant. Some of SoftBank’s worst-performing investments were Chinese artificial intelligence firm SenseTime and Indonesian technology group GoTo, both of which have seen shares plummet around 60% over the last year. Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s outspoken founder and the mastermind behind the Vision Fund, said in May that the company would go into “defense” mode and be more “conservative” with the pace of investments.

• The last two days have brought dramatic rescues, including small children emerging from mounds of debris more than 30 hours after Monday’s pre-dawn quake. But there was also widespread despair and growing anger at the slow pace of rescue efforts in some areas. Monday’s magnitude 7.8 quake and powerful aftershocks cut a swath of destruction that stretched hundreds of kilometers (miles) across southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria. The shaking toppled thousands of buildings and heaped more misery on a region wracked by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis.
