Thursday Afternoon Market Recap

$Dell Technologies Inc.(DELL)$ — Dell popped 7.7% after reporting second-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street's expectations. The technology company reported earnings per share of $1.74, excluding items, and $22.93 billion in revenue, while analysts polled by Refinitiv expected earnings per share of $1.14 and $20.85 billion.

$Broadcom(AVGO)$ — Shares of the semiconductor manufacturing company fell 4% after the company posted soft fiscal fourth-quarter guidance. The semiconductor company called for fourth-quarter revenue of $9.27 billion, while analysts polled by Refinitiv anticipated $9.275 billion.

$MongoDB Inc.(MDB)$ — Shares of the database software maker gained 5% in extended trading. MongoDB reported earnings of 93 cents per share, excluding items, on revenue totaling $423.8 million in the second quarter. That came in ahead of the earnings per share of 46 cents and $393 million in revenue expected by analysts polled by Refinitiv. 

Futures&Commodities

Gold futures prices in New York ended lower on Thursday, bringing their losses for August down more than 2%. Gold futures for December delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $7.10, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,965.90 an ounce. Based on the most active contracts, New York gold futures fell by about 2.2% in August.

U.S. WTI crude oil futures settled at their highest level in about three weeks on Thursday. Oil prices found support on expectations of tighter global crude supplies in the coming months. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery rose $2, or 2.5%, to settle at $83.63 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, its highest close since Aug. 9. In addition, WTI crude oil futures broke through the $83 mark for the first time since August 11. Based on the most active contracts, WTI crude oil futures rose 2.2% in August.
