Monday Afternoon Market Recap

Nvidia— Shares climbed 8.5% after HSBC reiterated a buy rating and raised its target price on the chipmaker. Baird also named Nvidia a top pick. The company reports earnings Wednesday after the bell. $NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$

Xpeng — The Chinese electric vehicle maker jumped 9.7% following an upgrade to buy from neutral by Bank of America. The firm said Xpeng should see improvements in China given its partnership with Volkswagen and better cost structure. $XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$

Tesla — The electric vehicle maker added 7.3%, regaining ground after tumbling about 11% last week following news of more price cuts in China. $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$

Futures&Commodities

Oil prices turned lower in the U.S. stock market as the outlook for demand under high interest rates from European and American central banks was worrisome. WTI September crude oil futures closed down US$0.53, or 0.65%, to US$80.72 per barrel. Brent October futures fell $0.34, or 0.40%, to $84.46 a barrel.

A weaker dollar lifted precious metals prices. COMEX December gold futures closed up 0.34% at $1,923.00 an ounce. COMEX October silver futures closed up 2.64% at $23.443 an ounce, a two-week high. Spot gold rose 0.3% and broke through the integer of $1,890, still not far from last week's five-month low of $1,883.70 since mid-March. Suppressed by the continued rise in U.S. bond yields, global gold ETF holdings fell lowest since April 2020.
