• U.S. stocks finished mixed in back-and-forth trading Tuesday afternoon as Wall Street weighed the implications of hotter-than-expected January inflation data on the path forward for interest rates.
• The S&P 500 (^GSPC) finished just below the flatline, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) shed about 150 points, or 0.4%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) rose 0.6%. All three averages pared bigger losses from early in the session. Treasury yields rose, with the benchmark 10-year note climbing roughly 4 basis points to about 3.76%.
• $Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$ — Shares of Airbnb jumped 10% afterthe company released fourth-quarter earningsthat topped analysts’ expectations. The company reported earnings per share of 48 cents, greater than the estimated 25 cents, according to consensus estimates from Refinitiv. Airbnb posted revenue of $1.90 billion, higher than the forecasted $1.86 billion.

• The European Parliament on Tuesday formally approved a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035, aiming to speed up the switch to electric vehicles and combat climate change.The landmark rules will require that by 2035 carmakers mustachieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissionsfrom new cars sold, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ racked up a7.51%gain on Tuesday to close at $209.25. The electric vehicle stock generated momentum during the session to end up at the highest level in three months on high volume of 214M shares.
• Back on the corporate side, shares of$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ surged 21% after the Peter Thiel-founded data firmreported its first-ever profitable quarterand said it expects 2023 to be its first profitable year.
• Warren Buffett dumped a significant portion of $Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM)$ , a chip stock he had just bought in the third quarter and made it Berkshire’s 10th biggest holding. At the end of 2022, Berkshire only owned just 8.3 million shares of the Taiwanese chipmaker’s American depositary receipts, worth $618 million, about 86% less than what it held in the previous quarter.
